LATITUDE C600 ************NEED HELP************

Question

I have a Dell Latitude C600.  I have just recently re-installed Windows XP onto it.  I had to put a New Hard Drive in it, that's why I re-intalled the Windows.   Anyways,  I have plugged the Ethernet Cable to My Cable modem into this, and it Does Not Work.  None of the Lights or anything come on when I put the Plug in, as it should.  Also, When i check my Device Manager.......  It is not showing any Network Adapters.   Anyone?

On the desktops, you must install the chipset drivers in order for motherboard devices such as the NIC to work (and before sound drivers).  May be the same on your laptop.  The install sequence is (1) install OS (2) install (motherboard) chipset drivers (3) install device drivers, etc.    Check the Dell downloads for your specific model for chipset drivers.  In most cases if you omitted them, you can still install them.   click on Technical Support at the top of this page then follow the on-screen to access the downloads for your system.

As I have seen on the other Driver Downloads for other Computers by Dell... there is a Selection for Chipset Drivers.   But.......... When I check the Latitude C600 Drivers Page.............. It's not shown!!   Any other Ideas?

Repost on the Latitude Hardware section.  Someone more familiar with Lattitude's should be able to assist you.  although it's concerning networking, it's really an install/hardware issue.

Chipset driver installation isn't required on a C600 under Windows XP, so that certainly isn't a problem.  Most probably, you either have a hardware malfunction, or you have some sort of exotic network adapter for which XP doesn't have native support.  It might help if you provide some details regarding your network adapter (manufacturer, model, OEM or aftermarket, etc.).  Running the Dell Diagnostics (details are in the under-utilized User Guide) might help, too.

Had similar problem with GX270 - Had to force reconfiguration of devices by entering BIOS and pressing Ctrl E then Ctrl F and saving settings  - also ensure NIC is enabled in the BIOS as WinXP should pick up these devices if they are working correctly.

Hi,   Was the network working before you reloaded the HDD ? Does it show in Bios ? The net card is a miniPCI card under the door in the base, it can be any one of a couple of brands and was not fitted to all. I installed Whistler (XP Beta) on my old c600 several years ago and all the hardware worked right out of the box with nothing needing to be downloaded.

The question is, are you using the Actiontec/Intel nic or the 3Com nic?

Also go into the bios and make sure it shows "Installed" in the MiniPCI section.

The c600 had a removable network card, the c610 and newer had it built in to the motherboard.
