Laptop Freezes when inserting power adapter
On several occasions it seems that while listening to Audio (either Windows Media or Internet Radio), inserting the Power Adapter into the laptop the system freezes, and a loud audio buzzing sound is heard. I must hold the power button of the laptop to drop power. Then able to restart with windows reminder that it did not shut down properly (as expected).
Laptop is Insprion 1440 running windows 7 64 bit, dual core, 2.10 GHz, 3 GB Ram.
Does anyone else experience this issue ?????
Does anyone have advice ???

If under warranty - consider calling DELL first and make sure the problem is logged (solution or not)
A lot things happen in Windows when inserting the AC power adapter.
To check if it's a classic CPU lock-up: repeatedly press capslock.
If the capslock light doesn't change, there's no live in there.
Assuming the CPU is locked up:
It's possible there's a log entry in the system log just before the AC power adapter is inserted.
These entries give clues where to look, just before things went sour.
Next try to reproduce it in Safe Mode (press F8 when Windows start)
If it's also in Safe Mode - try running an alternative OS (no need to install)
If the problem also shows up here - most likely it's a hardware issue.
Otherwise it's a windows issue - might be driver related.

I have a similar problem with both of my E1705 laoptops running windows. Unrelated to audio, just plugging or unplugging the Power Adaptor intermittantly causes the computer to freeze up. Totally infuriateing and unpredictable. Need to cycle power to get back up and running.

Hey Rose, I was contacted by tech support who suggested doing a BIOS firmware update. In my case, I performed the BIOS upgrade and the issue is about 95% resolved. I also begain to do the following (hope it makes sense):
1.Before using the Power Adapter. make sure it is unpluged from both laptop and wall socket.
2.Insert Power Adapter plug into laptop.
3.Insert Power Adapter wall plug into wall socket.
The reason I do this, is to reduce voltage pikes when applying power to the laptop.
Good Luck ......

Hello!!
Any solution to this problem!?! I've got the exact same problem on my 2 DAY OLD (!!!) Studio 17 (1749) laptop... And it's driving me mad...
The computer works fine when it's on battery-mode... But it freezes, after a while, when connected to AC. And it only freezes when AC is connected and i'm watching video or listening to audio...
Tried re-installing windows, updating BIOS, installed every available driver...
Any ideas!?!
