Laptop Not charging, Plugged in.

Question

Hey everyone,

I know this has probably been posted countless times and has been resolved, but I cant seem to find any solutions that have worked for me.

My laptop which is a XPS L502X has over the last couple of months has stopped charging when plugged in (with the supplied dell charger). At first it seemed to do it sporadically and worked absolutely fine the rest of the time. Now however, my laptop just will not charge whatsoever. I'm now down to 5%.

Every time the charger is plugged in I receive this me;

The AC power adapter type cannot be determined.

Your system will operate slower and battery will not charge.

This problem might be solved by;

- Ensure the plug is inserted completely for the best system operation.

- Connect a Dell 130W AC adapter or higher.

Please help :)

First thing to try is a new Dell power supply. If you know another Dell system user, just try their power supply - even if i'ts not a 130W adapter, it should be recognized by the system. If their adapter works, you'll need to purchase a new adapter.

If not, next replace the power jack:

And if that doesn't work, replace the mainboard.

Hi Wjb07146,

It is great that the AC Adapter has started charging the battery. We recommend you update the BIOS of your computer to avoid recurrence of this issue in future. Please click on the link below to update the BIOS:

Plug your computer to a good, working UPS before you update the BIOS. If you experience a loss of AC power or a significant voltage sag/spike during the BIOS flash, you will either have to replace the BIOS chip or motherboard. Disconnect all external devices and confirm there is no cd/dvd in the optical drive prior to updating the BIOS.

Just tried my girlfriends dell charger, it recognise it as a charger but not a dell one and it didnt charge. But when I put mine back in it started charging :D. Strange!!!!

Please click on the link below for troubleshooting the AC Adapter issue with your Dell Computerl.

Since you are getting an error message, please click on the sub-link "AC Adapter Error Message Occurs" and follow the troubleshooting steps mentioned in the link.

You can try connecting another good known ac adapter to ascertain if the problem is with your system AC Adapter. If you still get errors, the problem could be related to the DC port/motherboard.
