Most likely the backlight system. Various things can go wrong. If under warranty, call Dell. If not, look around for a local shop that can diagnose and repair backlight problems. Will cast $100-200.
I have a similar problem. My laptop started being very touchy about the display. If the screen was titled too far back, it wouldn't display. If you tilted it forward (towards the keyboard) it would display. Then it stopped working altogether. Any ideas?

This could be a loose plug for the cable that drives the screen. Check your owners manual for the procedure to get to the plug/socket.
