Latitude D430 winXP Bluetooth Wireless 360 problem: slow response
Dear Forum,
Looking for some advice on a cumbersome issue which seems related to the Bluetooth SW stack.
Some information:
Latitude D430 notebook, 2 GB RAM, running WinXP pro, all MS updates, office computer, MS Office 2003.
I recently got the system and separately purchased from Dell the 'Wireless 360' Bluetooth module. I installed the module and BT stack (Toshiba, version v4.41.02(D)). I'm using BT mainly to connect to my mobile phone, for which 'Nokia Suite' v6.85.141 is installed. The Nokia Suite work fine and as expected.
Problem:
When opening a .doc/.xls file by double clicking in Windows Explorer, the system response is very slow. Like 40 (!) secs to open a 30 KB Word document. This is reproducable. For some other files, like .pdf the response is much better. Starting Word via the start button and using Word's file/open to access the same file is OK. Opening Windows Explorer using windows-E hotkey is very slow as well, opening Windows Explorer via start menu is normal.
I do not see any 'heavy' disk access or 100% CPU during the delay.
For the rest, the notebook runs OK
Workaround:
When I disable the Bluetooth Manager (system tray, right click BT icon, select exit, yes) response is normal again. Re-enabling the Bluetooth Manager get the same problem (after a few minutes) back.
Tried so far (without success):
- reinstalling the BT drivers (advice from Dell Chat)
- Dell Chat also advised me to reinstall WiFi SW
- Dell Chat suggestion to reinstall the PC from scratch was not done for practical reasons
- Installing the Toshiba BT stack version 5.10.12(T) (from Toshiba website) yielded an additional problem (process 'services.exe' non-stop eats up ~35% of CPU)
Question:
- Anybody recognize this?
- Any suggestions?
Thanks in advance! Wytze

Hi, so far this problem has been a frustrating one. Both Nokia and Dell helpdesk turn down any resposibility arguing that the product is OK 'without the other product', and therefore, I should contact 'the other' supplier (Dell, Nokia if you read this: this is how to create unhappy customers). Anyhow, Microsoft helpdesk was willing to help and several calls laters we concluded that the connectivity part of Nokia's PC Suite v6.85 in combination with the Dell supplied OEM Toshiba BT stack caused the problem. Unfortunately, they could not tell if or when Microsoft would support the Dell 360 BT module in the Windows Bluetooth SW stack.
Along the way, an acceptable workaround was found: use PC Suite 6.83.14.1. instead, this does not have the problem. In view of time spent, we decided not to investigate further.

Nope, sorry, no alternatives. The method followed to pinpoint the problem was selectively disabling more and more (non Microsoft) services using msconfig, rebooting each time and noting down the number of processes remaining. Until thee was some clue of what was causing it. A tedious and lengthy process with initially conflicting results. Please consider a "Don't try this at home folks" warning since this process might have unwanted side effects. Note that I had the MS helpdesk guiding me.

We are having the same problem with the D630 and it uses Toshiba Bluetooth stack by default.
What im going to try is to use the microsoft stack driver.
According to the article on the nokia site it should be working with the workaround.
http://discussions.nokia.co.uk/discussions/board/message?board.id=pcsuite&thread.id=23324
After reading this topic im going to test this:
http://www.vinsvision.com/Articles/tabid/66/EntryID/13/Default.aspx
ill post the result.

Edit:
well i downloaded the msi the guy created and marked in the nokia suite the microsoft bluetooth device and it worked. Now hope that there will be a fix in the future.
ITS a workaround not a solution.
I cannot find the cause of this... this is bad part...
Who's fault is this?

Hi,
Thanks for the information!
(rather straightforward)
And after the usual fiddling with BT pairing and other settings: works!
Indeed what remains is:
- problem in Nokia's PC Suite?
- problem in Toshiba's BT Stack?
- ??
Thanks, Wytze
