Latitude D820?

My Latitude C840 is really showing it's age. I'm debating whether it is worthwhile to wait it out a few more months for the next version of the Latitude or just take the plunge now. Has anyone heard of a newer version in the works?

Thanks!

If I were you I would wait until February when the D620 and D820 are released. I spoke with the prod manager in NL a few weeks ago about it. Seems like the D820 will have 4Gb ram support, dual core cpu and some other nice features.

We had two guys from Dell over today. There was no talk of an NDA, so I think I can pass this on: The new Latitude series will have widescreens, will be wider but less deep and less high. They look pretty - outside silver, inside black. The've come a long way from the D600 series... Finally a Dell laptop I would buy :smileywink:. Drives will be SATA, except for the D420, which will have 1.8" PATA. The D410 and X1 will be rolled into one machine, the D420, and have a widescreen 12.1" LCD. They'll let the D610 and D620 overlap for about half a year, to get customers used to widescreen. They talked about a 7 hour battery life for the D620, but I believe this is with an extra battery.

Hey Guys,
I am a hardware warranty tech for Dell Latitudes. The D620 and D820 will be launched April 3rd as far as i know. They will be using a SATA hard drive, Dual core processors, a new kind of wireless networking called WWAN (Can connect through any cell phone connection), They also feature an all new Biometric reader which is optional for better security (scanning of a fingerprint instead of using a login and password). They both come with widescreen LCD screens. If anyone has any questions feel free to ask me. :smileywink:

Thanks for the info! My C840 is hanging on for dear life! :smileywink:

Everybody I know whose company buys from Dell is waiting until these come out to replace theirs...makes me wonder how far out the build/ship dates will be.

Aside from some impressive specs...where before the Latitudes and Precisions were visually similar Dell seems to have taken steps to make them more distinct lineups. For instance, the picture I saw of the M90 made it appear to be a more business-like version of the M170 gaming platform whereas the D820 resembled the D410 in terms of layout and color scheme. Have any of you seen any different.

I've heard the M90 won't be out until April 14th...is that true?

I'm also wondering about 'D/port advanced port replicator' compatibility, particularly in the D820.

Also what video card card options will the D820 have and do they support the resolutions required buy the Dell 24" wide screen LCD?

On a side note any word on a M70 replacement with core duo?

Thanks in advance.

Coolji:

just to give you some answers so you don't have to wait:
1 - biometric reader is not the default; it is an 'upgrade option'
2 - the card reader does come as the default configuration
3 - there are 3 video card options; 1 Intel which is shared & 2 nVidia cards w/ traditional memory.

You might want to hit the US Dell.com site, as all of the configuration options are displayed (even compared to internal options).

I'm having a strange problem. I got a new killer D820 from work. I've been able to get both the Windows-managed and Intel-managed wireless settings to connect to my protected home wireless network. Not a problem at all.

Problem is even though I have an IP address (can do a "repair", etc), the connection works for less than a minute, then it won't work anymore. Can't even ping my router! But while it's misbehaving like this, signal strength is almost perfect, no errors anywhere.

While the system is misbehaving, other computers on my network (also wireless) work just fine.

Any ideas? :\

We bought a D820 and loaded Windows XP but I could not from the driver from the resource CD for BioMetric Coprocessor so there is always an exclamation mark in Device manager. Please let me know where to find the driver or it doesn't matter to leave like that?
