Latitude E5430 - Problems with fan control

Hi, I just bought a Latitude E5430 expecting to get some Dell Business notebook Quality. I am using Windows 8 x64 (in UEFI-mode) with BIOS A09 and the latest Drivers available from dell.com.

The issue that I am encountering is that as soon as the fan turns on, it does not turn off for a long time (blowing out cool air), even though there is no high system load (just Internet Explorer opened) and the temperature is below 50C.

Basically, the fan starts at some temperature threshold, cools down the CPU to 38-40C, and even though the running fan does not cause the CPU to cool down more, it keeps running for a long time (10 minutes and counting) (while the CPU temperature constantly stays at 38-40C). :-(

Please forward this issue to the BIOS development department so that they can provide an update which improves fan control.

Everyone also having this issue, please have a look at this post from Dell-Terry B:

where he is requesting more information from users affected.

Terry, any news yet? The fan is driving me insane. I am a E5430 user and the FN Z option works however just for only 20-25 sec.

Update: first impression - no change. Fan kicks in and 2800RPM all the time. Fn+Z shuts it down for a minute or so, then it turns on again.

Big disappointment. Again.

There is a new BIOS:

Change log:

1. Enhanced POST logo functionality.

2. Enhanced Secure boot functionality.

3. Enhanced HDD password functionality.

4. Improved system password functionality.

5. Improved DDPA functionality.

6. Improved USB functionality at Pre-boot environment.

7. Support DIMM isolation.

8. Update Intel Management Engine firmware to 8.1.30.1350.

I will update my Dell and let you know if it helps.

I will check with my contacts in engineering to see if there is an exact date where we can expect a BIOS or firmware update to change the system thermals to help reduce system noise.  I will post here with what I find out.

Terry, this problem is ongoing since dec. 2012!  Half a year has past and the last offered solution, wich was a promissed bios update, isn't the solution. Last June should be the deadline. It's disappointing.

I have spoke with engineering and they are suggesting downloading the new A11 bios revision to possibly help with fan noise issues.  If you haven't already done so please do and report back here if you notice any differences in how much noise the system generates.  In your reply please include any software or utilities that you may be using to measure system temp, fan speed, or any utilities used to attempt to change fan speeds.

Thank You

As far as I can tell from now, BIOS A11 does not change anything - issue with fan control still happens both on a vanilla Windows 8 installation and a vanilla Ubuntu 13.04 installation.

Thank You Pirast_

Do you use any software tools or utilities to measure span feed and temps and if so what are they?

All,

since 2 days running with the A11 bios. There is a slight diverence, the fan doesn't kick in as often as before. I'm a standard user with online office software tools installed  (e.g. MS Office etc.) I'm using coretemp for momitoring purposes, the processor model is the i5 3320m. Usuallly the load is max. 20% and fan kicks in at 68 degrees and shuts down at 58 or less.

@Terry:

are there news concerning a fan-reduced BIOS-version for the E6430?

Engineering is telling me that A11 does change a little how the fan runs.  From the way they sound you should see a slight decrease in the time spent with the fan running, and when the fan kicks on it should make a little less sound.  If the system seems loud to you I certainly suggest updating to A11 if you have not already.

Please keep posting here the results after updating A11.

That is correct Petepete,

Currently this isn't a discussion from engineering regarding a bios upgrade for the 6430 only for the 5430.  For the 6430 they are suggesting standard troubleshooting and if needed replace the fan assembly.

@Terry: Your last post ist related to BIOS A11 for E5430 and not to BIOS A11 for E6430?

Yes this is VERY annoying.

I had 6220 and it worked like a charm. E5430 is just badly designed, otherwise they would have put the fix already.

Very disappointing since it's popular model.

Updated to A11 - no change from A10. I would never buy Dell again after such a support.

Same problem here with E5430.  Updated to A11, no difference.  I have a SSD - when the laptop starts, it's silent as can be.   Sometimes silent for 30 minutes or more during light use (processor 10 - 20% max).  Once that fan starts, it never stops.  Continues to blow cool air for hours.  If you hit Fn+Z or sleep then resume, it stops the fan.. but only for a little while, then back to continuous fan even under light load.  Looking forward to a fix!
