Latitude E6540 Ram upgrade options

I am looking to purchase a Latitude E6540 laptop. Intel lists the 4th Gen Mobile CPU's as being able support up to 32GB of RAM, will the E6540 support this much RAM? Dell does not offer it as a option but am wondering if 3rd party memory will allow this configuration.

Hello MattRelouw,

Maximum Memory supported by Dell Latitude E6540 is 16GB and was never tested with 32GB. However, as 4th Gen Mobile CPU's supports up to 32GB memory, the system might support 32GB memory. Any branded memory should do.

**NOTE: Completely based upon user's discretion.

I contacted Intelligent Memory,  http://www.intelligentmemory.com, one of the only manufacturers with 16GB SODIMMs about 32GB for a Dell e6540.

Here's the response:

The Dell Latitude e6540 uses standard Intel processors.

The BIOS on this system contains a "memory initialization software" (called MRC) which is provided by Intel. And this MRC software is not prepared to understand 16GB modules, the system would hang up.

Dell or Intel could both easily modify this software and release a new BIOS update, but there is no plan to do that.

Thanks for the response,  We have a couple on the way so will give it a go when they arrive.

Has anyone been successful trying more than 16GB yet?  If it was possible, I'd definitely buy the upgrade.

I haven't found any 16GB DDR3 DO-DIMM modules to try yet, BUT I did try some upgraded modules from Crucial with a higher PC rating and a lower CAS...

I put this in the machine:

Crucial Ballistix Sport 16GB (2 x 8G) 204-Pin DDR3 SO-DIMM DDR3 1866 (PC3 14900) Laptop Memory Model BLS2K8G3N18AES4

There was some question as to whether they would work or not, and how the system would treat them.  Crucial guarantees this part to run in the E6540, but not that it will run any better than the PC3-12800 and CAS11 that the system is spec'd for....

Here are my results...  (excerpts from SiSoft Sandra System Report)

Memory Module(s)
Memory Module Crucial BLS8G3N18AES416FE 8GB DDR3 SO-DIMM PC3-14200S DDR3-1778 (10-10-10-32 6-46-14-7)
Memory Module Crucial BLS8G3N18AES416FE 8GB DDR3 SO-DIMM PC3-14200S DDR3-1778 (10-10-10-32 6-46-14-7)

Note that while it isn't running at the full speed of the module's capability, it IS running faster than the memory spec cited on the E6540's documentation.  It is running at DDR3-1778 / PC3-14200 rather than DDR3-1600 / PC3-12800 and at CAS 10 rather than CAS 11.

I don't have my memory tests from the stock memory, but here are the results for this upgrade:

SiSoft Sandra Bandwidth Results

Cache & Memory Latency

Cache Bandwidth

Memory Transaction Throughput

Bottom Line...  my machine screams with these memory modules...  :emotion-1:

"Any branded memory should do."

Help - I bought 2 x 8GB sticks of PNY memory, and didn't have any luck...it was PC3-12800, CL9...normal 1.5V...when I installed it and turned the computer back on, the HDD light was on continuous, WiFi light was on continuous, and the Batt was flashing.

I looked at a couple places online, and the sticks that I bought are listed as compatible...apparently not, though.  I took them back out, and put the original 4GB stick back in...tried several diff combinations along the way, to make sure it wasn't just a bad stick...no luck.  Does this have to be the low voltage version...1.35V?

Anyways, I ended up putting the PNY in my Lenovo...worked fine.  Ideas?  Thanks.

Most of the Haswell-based notebooks (of which this is one) require the lower voltage RAM -- so yes, 1.35V is very likely required and why the RAM didn't work.

I have a Dell Latitude E6540 and saw the post where you were attempting to upgrade to 32GB of RAM.  I would like to upgrade as well....and was hoping you could give me some feedback on your experience while doing this upgrade.  Was it successful and did it make a noticeable difference worth the added expense?  If so, would you please share with me the particulars on what RAM you purchased.

Thank you for your help,

James

Hi MattRelouw,

did you have any luck with the 32GB Ram upgrade to your E6540?

Thanks.

I never purchased the upgrade based on what the vendor said.  It was a lot of money to spend with no guarantee that Intel or Dell would ever update the BIOS.

I ended up purchasing a Precision M4800 which has 4 DIMM slots for 32GB of supported memory.

Thank you Essjae,

I am hoping to hear from others that may have been able to do the upgrade at risk.

Cheers.
