Logitech Cordless MX Duo - Laptop Keyboard & Touchpad NOT WORKING

Question

I bought the Logitech MX Duo cordless keyboard / mouse unit and installed the supplied software, itouch 2.15 and Mouseware 9.75

My Laptop is a Dell Inspiron 8000 running on W2000.

The Logitech unit works but now neither my Laptop keyboard or touchpad work any longer. I cannot use my laptop alone, if I unplug the USB Logitech unit and restart, the Laptop keyboard and touchpad do not work.

I found a posting on this site with a similar problem on a different computer. The fix posted by dean.forbes

suggest going to the path

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/SYSTEM/CurrentControlSet/services/i8042prt/ and changing the start string from 4 to 1.

I am cautious about editing the windows registry and wanted to know if this fix has worked for anyone else or is there another approach to the problem.

When I contacted Dell support and tried normal rebooting sequences and safe mode attempts, it was suggested that a Windows re-install may be required.

Unfortunately, I can't comment explicitly on the use of the combination, but I will say that if you haven't tried the registry edit route yet, you should.  Always exhaust all avenues before going off and reinstalling the OS which most support reps (for any company) likes to throw out as the best course of action.

You might also want to try reinstalling the Dell touchpad software to see if it makes a difference.  I know that often the software from Microsoft or Logitech will interfere with the synaptecs or alps software that Dell uses.

Thank you for your responses - dirgon and nkrick.

So far I have tried to re-install the latest touchpad driver from Dell, but it did not fix the problems as both the laptop keyboard and touchpad still do not work. The touchpad driver did not fully install to completion as you would normally expect.

I will wait for a few more suggestions before taking further action.

Did the install give you an error or did it just stop and exit?

Hi Kerry, when I re-installed the touchpad driver it appeared that the install was taking place for awhile then it just ended and put me back to the windows desktop. The normal messages that the installation was complete did not appear. I rebooted to see if the driver would load and when I checked the device manager it reports an error code 32 on the PS/2 compatible Mouse.

Did you uninstall the original touchpad driver from Add/Remove Programs before you tried reinstalling it?

I just fixed the same problem on a Dell Latitude with that registry change. Try it!

Well after hearing that the registry fixed worked for you as well, I got brave enough to go into the W2000 registry and made the change today and "volia" my laptop keyboard and mouse are both working again and so is the Logitech wireless keyboard and mouse.

I did not get any help or response from Logitech on this problem. I sent 2 email messages to them fully explaining the problem and I did not get a response at all after waiting several weeks for a reply.

Thank you to those that contributed on this forum with a solution to the problem and replied to my posting, I really appreciate the help and I learned something as well!

Identical problem but with different product.

Microsoft Wireless Optical Mouse and Keyboard on Latitude C640

Emailed Microsoft, tipical useless response. But compares to Logitech, at least I got response.
