Memory options for Precision M6700

I have 32GB of memory that I used in a different laptop (another manufacturer). I still have the memory and I'm wondering if I can use it in Dell's Precision M6700. Is there anyway that I can find out or someone can tell me that it will or will not work? I have 4 modules:

Product Identifiers
Brand Crucial
MPN CT102472BA160B
UPC 649528754851
Key Features
Memory Size 8 GB
Form Factor DIMM
Memory Speed 1600 MHz
Memory Technology DDR3
Series PC3-12800

Yes, they'll do fine (as noted above, i7 required for 4-soDIMM support;  i5 supports only two).

That's a desktop memory module - you can't use it in your notebook.  The notebook requires soDIMM memory (notebook form factor).

Hi rhrempel,

Welcome to Dell community!

The memory configuration in Precision M6700 is based on the processor. All 4 memory slots (DIMM) will work if the computer has Intel Core i7 Quad Core or i7 Quad Extreme processors. Only 2 DIMM slots will work in configurations with Intel Core i5 or i7 Dual Core processors.

May I know which processor is in your computer?

I was thinking about the Dell Precision M6700 with Intel® Core™ i7-3740QM Processor.

@ejn63: I checked and the memory modules do say SODIMM on them. I copied the info in my initial post from the manufacturer's site. I'm not sure why it says DIMM. Is that what you were referring to? Either way, I appreciate your response.

The memory you have won't work in any notebook - it's for desktop systems.

This is what you have:

This is what you need:

@enj63 Wow. The pictures make it clear that the memory modules are different. But mine does not look like the picture of "the part I have" that you linked to. It looks more like the one "I need".

I attached pictures below to see if it helps.

Again, I appreciate your assistance!

Those are indeed soDIMMs but look at your initial post - what you posted there isn't that part number.  What you initially referenced are desktop DIMMs.

Well that explains it. It was my mistake. I must have copied it from the wrong page. Thanks for catching it.

  • Part Number: CT102464BF160B
  • Module Size: 8GB
  • Package: 204-pin SODIMM
  • Feature: DDR3 PC3-12800
  • Specs: DDR3 PC3-12800 • CL=11 • Unbuffered • NON-ECC • DDR3-1600 • 1.35V • 1024Meg x 64 •

I will assume that I can use these memory modules.

Thanks again!

I bought the M6700 and it works with the 32GB of RAM. I don't know if you can upgrade the processor that comes with the M6700.

Here are some of the specs for my M6700 mobile workstation.

CPU

Intel® Core™ i7-3840QM (3.80 GHz, 8MB L3, 1333MHz FSB)

Memory

32GB RAM (2 x Crucial CT3291640 16GB kit (8GBx2), 204-pin SODIMM)

Drive 1

256GB SSD

Drive 2

512GB SSD

Drive 3

128GB SSD

Optical Drive

Internal CD/DVD

SDHD Card

32GB Memory Card (if needed)

I use the workstation to run multiple virtual machines - basically, a small SharePoint 2013 farm. I have a blog about it here: http://rhrempel.wordpress.com/

In full disclosure, I joined Dell recently.

The following videos showed me the steps to replace the memory chips and add two SSDs. The videos are not published or supported by Dell (or me).

Thanks for the postings!  I have a Dell M6700 with an Intel i7-3540M Processor (Dual Core 3.00 GHz) in which myself and my IT department have been working on to try to upgrade to 32 GB RAM and we couldn't figure it out until we found this post.

Follow-on question - can this system be upgraded to a Intel i7 Quad Core processor, where I'll then be able to utilize the 32 GB of RAM?

Hi Hepp56,

Welcome to Dell community!

Yes, since the Precision M6700 system supports Intel Core i7 Quad Core processors, you can upgrade the processor. Following are the i7 Quad core and i7 Quad Extreme processors with their respective Dell part numbers, that have been tested with this system:

  • i7-3720QM – Part # 8WJJT
  • i7-3740QM – Part # 9F80J
  • i7-3840QM – Part # DYRVH
  • i7-3820QM – Part # GRN53
  • i7-3920XM – Part # 51WMR
  • i7-3940XM – Part # PDTJ3

You may refer the following link for Precision M6700 owner’s manual which has detailed instructions for the removal and installation of the processor: http://bit.ly/ZBugNz

If you are interested in upgrading the processor, kindly let me know in which country are you located so that I can provide contact details for our Dell Spare Parts sales team.

I wanted to follow up on this posting and let everyone know that my Dell Precision M6700 mobile workstation has worked perfectly since I purchased it. I never had any problems with swapping out the memory or adding two more solid state drives. I work this laptop extremely hard at times with up to 5 virtual machines running simultaneously. I am running Windows 8.1 with Classic Shell - customizable Start menu and Start button. This workstation is by far the most powerful computer I have ever owned. I'm very happy with this purchase.
