Mission Impossible : Finding replacement motherboard for Inspiron 7720
Hello,
I have an Inpiron 7720, which is about 3 years old, so I am not covered by the warranty anymore.
Recently, my laptop suddenly stopped working, won't boot at all. Also whenever I connected the power adapter, the adapter led turns off. I isolated the problem, and found out it to be because of the motherboard, might have a short somewhere on the board.
I asked Dell about the repair, and they told me it would cost $350, which is pretty costly, but the real problem is the huge turnaround time.
Then I decided to replace it myself, I found out it is really hard to find a board. The model of the board is DA0R09MB6H1 CN-0MV67N, it's one of those models with a 3D vision Nvidia card.
I found out similar models from China, but not really this one. Is there a place that they sell Dell motherboards in North America? I could not find any motherboard for sale on Dell's website.

(it's a different part number but functionally the same board).
If Dell has quoted you a long turnaround on repair, it's likely there would be just as long a wait for the part. The problem with newer notebooks, particularly those that weren't sold in large numbers like this one, is that the spare parts supply is very limited.

I thought the part number had to be the same. Is it OK if I use another one?

As long as the feature set is the same, you should be OK.
There are very often multiple part numbers for the same feature set.

I have the exact same issue with my Inspiron 17 R SE.
I've replaced the DC input, which has not fixed the issue and am continuing to look into the problem.
Do you have any details on when this happened to you?
My laptop has been running fine since I got it (3 years ago as well), the only major change to the system was applying the upgrade to Windows 10.
The fault developed around the start of September 2015.
I'm curious to know if this will develop into a design/component fault (similar to the old Dell capacitor issue which affected a large amount of their desktops)...

Hello Mattid,
This seems to be a common problem with Inspirons, not just the 17R.
For many of the models, people just buy a power board replacement, such as this one: http://www.amazon.com/3cleader%C2%AE-INSPIRON-1545-POWER-CHARGER/dp/B005CLMDPM
They are not so expensive.
The problem is that the 7720 does not have a separate power board, this component is integrated with the motherboard. This means that when this problem happens, you have to replace the whole thing, which costs a lot more.
You can find a couple of boards on eBay and AliExpress, just be careful with the feature set.
For me, it was just not worth replacing it. I ended up getting a new laptop (Not Dell though).
