Monitor turns blank when AC adapter is plugged in

I have Inspiron 6400 laptop and the monitor turns off/Standby mode when ac adapter is plugged in. My battrey does get charged with the same adapter but once plugged to AC adapter every now and then the monitor turns off. Monitor works absolutely fine on battrey power when adapter is removed.

I have changed the charger and changed all  power management option to 'Never' inspite of all this effort the problem continues.

please suggest

Try another adapter.  If it does the same thing, odds are the mainboard is faulty.

^dang that stinks I have the same problem with my D620, when i unplug the laptop its fine, but when i plug the ac adapter back in the screen goes blank but it seems the machine is still on by the power light.

Also if i just unplug the ac adapter from the wall and plug it back in, than the screen will not have that issue.

thad be weak if the motherboard is shot

I am wondering this to be a BIOS problem and being out of warranty not sure how to address this.

It's not a BIOS problem - however, if you've already changed the mainboard, and you know the replacement is OK, is the display and inverter original to the system, or were those replaced as well?

what video cards are being used with those systems?

I started to have the same problem with my Inspiron 600m. When i plug in the AC adapter, after a few minutes the monitor turns off (kind of,i realized that the screen is still there but the light are off). It works fine if i reboot the laptop without AC.

The power configurations do not help. I tried to switch to another monitor but the monitor didn't connect to my laptop (may be my bad).

Does anyone have a solution or a suggestion?

OK, i solved what was going on. The confusing part was why the monitor was turning off when plugged in. Apparently, when ac is plugged in the brightness of the monitor was increasing, when the brightness is decreased from the set-up the monitor was also working when plugged in.

For a while i used the laptop with decreased brightness but it didn't take long to stop  functioning even with that brightness.

The main problem was the backlight. I changed the backlight (costs only $8) and it is all good.

Thanks for posting about the backlight fix.  I guess my kids were pushing every button on my computer.
