Much trouble after removing adware istbar virus
I do alot of research on my own and have had no luck w\posts or google sites that give instr. It seems every time I turn a corner I get stopped again. I can research the sites I've marked to let other users know where I have been and what I tried.
After nortons found and removed the adware istbar virus from my laptop (old post) many new problems since. Cant defrag or get live updates for nortons or at the dell checkup site cant download the new updates they tell me to. live update is error 1803, defrag window appears but nothing happens. PS, I have spybot and adaware and adwatch, But recently removed AVG free and spywareblaster thinking they were stopping or binding my laptop. Also have my windows firewall shut off and only use the norton firewall. Any takers?

Viruses can do some nasty things to computers and so can Norton. My suggestion would be to start from scratch. Wipe the drive and reinstall Windows. I'm not sure what the virus you had actually did to your machine but it apears to have messed with some of the core files. Historically some of Norton's services use huge ammounts of memory and CPU time. I personnaly wouldn't use their firewall and would consider just using the MS one installed with SP2...it's already on there, you might as well use that one. As far as AV software Norton's ok but you might run into the same speed issues and 100% CPU useage.
As far as fixing your OS... at this point I wouldn't even bother. You attempted to repair using the OS disk and that didn't work. Backup your data and start from scratch with a new build. Just make sure the data you back up isn't infected first.
