No HDMI audio output from D3100

I am trying to connect my JMB TV to my Dell Inspiron 7559 through the D3100 docking station. I have a picture but no audio. There is no HDMI option in the Windows 10 sound device manager. When I connect the TV directly into the laptop I have no problem with audio.

Hi Robert,

For your info I got the issue resolved on the DisplayLink Forum:-

"The Dell D3100 routes the sound to multiple outputs simultaneously so, unlike the dedicated graphics card sound adapter, it won't take the name of your amplifier as it can't take multiple names. It would be a bit overwhelming to get 5 new audio devices (2 HDMI, 1 DP, 2 jacks) just for the dock anyway...

If you don't get any sound on the Sony receiver, can you try removing the jack to see if that enables it?
I'm not sure how Dell implemented the audio on their dock".

This worked for me.  I removed the rear jack and hey presto sound was rerouted to HDMI!

Cheers.

Hi Robert,

I followed your instructions and reinstalled the latest BIOS, chipset drivers, video driver and displaylink software. I could not find any USB 3.0 drivers for my laptop on the Dell Support site.

None of this has worked and I still have the same problem.  I still have no HDMI devices showing in sound properties, only Dell USB Audio and Realtek High Definition Audio. I do however get HDMI Audio when I plug my TV directly into the HDMI port of my laptop.

Any other suggestions?

I also noticed that no matter how many times I update the Intel Management Engine Interface Driver and Intel Serial IO Driver, even though driver update is successful when I run the Dell detect and update software again it wants to update them again. Could this be part of the problem?

Here is some information from Microsoft that may be useful.

You can also find these settings in the dock menu:

Click the icon for access to more settings.

Post back if you need additional assistance.  Thanks

Robert

Hello whataguywants.

Don't think there are any experts here, either on HDMI audio or the D3100. I wrote the HDMI Audio FAQ but all of the information I put in it is based on what other people posted about the subject, not on any expertise I personally have.

I followed your instructions and reinstalled the latest BIOS, chipset drivers, video driver

My thinking is that because your HDMI audio works when not on the dock, then the laptop is configured properly as far as drivers, etc. [Your laptop may have both both Intel graphics and nVidia, so both should be updated to latest ... but doubt that is the problem.]

I could not find any USB 3.0 drivers for my laptop on the Dell Support site.

Usb drivers are native to Windows, so I would guess that those drivers are updated by Microsoft updates, but I don't know for sure. As you discovered, Dell does not supply those drivers. It might or might not help to update the usb 3.0 usb host controller, which should be in the Device Manager under USB Controllers.

I still have no HDMI devices showing in sound properties, only Dell USB Audio and Realtek High Definition Audio.

Try right clicking in the area where the devices are listed, and make sure that "show hidden" and "show disconnected" devices are checked. If doing that does not produce a listing for HDMI Audio, then select Usb Audio as the default device, to ensure that audio is being routed to the dock. [But I don't have the dock and don't know exactly how it works. If it is a simple pass-through device, then selecting Usb Audio probably just passes the signal to the dock's DAC, and usb ports.]

I do however get HDMI Audio when I plug my TV directly into the HDMI port of my laptop.

When HDMI audio is working okay, while undocked, you still don't see a listing for HDMI audio in the Windows Sound properties playback devices list?

The D3100 manual says that in the DisplayLink Manager Menu there is a Menu Option for Audio Setup, which opens the "Windows Audio Configuration Window".  So does the "Windows Audio Configuration Window" have any additional options, or is it just the regular Sound properties dialogue?
