Since the system is based off of a Core i-series processor, the OS's that are going to be supported are Windows Vista Home Premium, Business, Ultimate and Enterprise, all 64-bit versions.
Windows 7 Home Premium, Professional, Ultimate and Enterprise, all 64-bit versions also.
Technically speaking, you can run Windows Server 2008 and 2008 R2, any of the x64 versions, but those are very pricey and quite useless for most people.
If you don't want Windows you can install pretty much any version of Linux released after 2005, as long as it's an AMD64 or x64 variant.
The reason Windows XP isn't going to be supported is the hard drive interface is SATA, which is the new standard and XP lacks support for AHCI SATA drives, which are far faster than the regular IDE hard drives Windows XP was designed to run on.
The reason you need a 64-bit operating system is that if you have more than 4 GB of ram you aren't going to be able to use more than 4 GB of ram due to limitations in the 32-bit design, which was made back in the late 80s.
Recently i installed 32 bit Ubuntu 12.04 on my Dell Inpiron N5110 (i5). I found my laptop gets more heated when compared to running on Windows 7 Home Basic.
Is Ubuntu compatible with Dell?, also i would like to know, what all flavours of Linux are compatible with my laptop

Unless it's shutting it self down from heat it's fine, the fan during POST is normal for making sure it functions.
