P991 has poor resolution with D520 when docked

I have a Dell P991 monitor hooked up to my docking station. It's capable of very high resolutions and refresh rates - I had it set to 1280x1024 at 85hz on my D510 when docked. When I got my D520 and docked it, the monitor would only display 1024x768 at 60hz.
 
Why is this the case and what can I do to get the previously available display options? I have hooked up a different monitor in the mean time and it will display resolution and refresh rates as it should but, I really would like to switch back to my tried and true P991.

So... Increase the resolution in the display properties?

First, make sure that you have the Dell or Intel graphics drivers installed.
Second, make sure that you have at least 2 monitors available in the graphics settings - one is marked as internal and one (or more) as external.
 
Select the desired configuration from here.

All of the things that shoiuild be there (the 2 monitors, etc) are there. The only problem is that the external monitor only shows 1024 x 768 at 60hz as it's maximum available resolution. I tried another D530 laptop that another user has and it does the same thing.
 
The monitor works fine when other machines are hooked up to it. I've since gotten a flat screen monitor and given the P991 to another user.

Ok.
 
Select the option for single display. Select the external monitor and reboot.
After rebooting, does it only use the external monitor?
 
Once it's rebooted, go for "display properties" - "advanced button" - "adapter tab" - "list all modes".
Do you find re desired resolution and refresh rate in this list?
If yes, go for "display properties" - "advanced button" - "monitor tab".
What does it say in the field "monitor type"?
And is box "Hide modes the monitor cannot display" checked?
If yes - clear the check-box and try again selecting the desired configuration by selecting it for the list:
"display properties" - "advanced button" - "adapter tab" - "list all modes"
 
If the answer to the first question is "NO", then I'm not able to help you out - sorry.
