PC won't start up - Fan is just running at maximum???

I have had no probelms with my Dell desktop to date, but last night when I went to turn it on as normal, instead of it starting up, all that happened was the fan went on to full speed and the system didn't start up at all???

Do you think it may be a hardware failure of some sort?

Any advise would be much appreciated...

Thanks.

Open the case up and reset the BIOS is the first thing I would try, and make sure any expansion cards, memory and cables are all seated properly.

What model is it? Most of them tend to have the jumper near the floppy drive connector. look for a jumper marked RTC/RST

It's a Dell Dimension 8100 I think? Will need to check tonight when home.

I'll look for the jumper - do I just press it, which triggers the reset?

Sorry, could you advise how I reset the BIOS? I have had the box open and can't see anything which has come loose.

Thanks.

OK, the jumper is located at the bottom of the board, opposite the PCI slots, next to the battery. you'll have to short the two pins with a jumper, or just touch them with the tip of a screwdriver to connect the two pins for a second,t his will clear the BIOS. Also make sure all your expansion cards and memory chips are seated properly.
