Power light remains on after shutdown. Have to switch off manually.
I have a dell inspiron N5050 laptop with windows 7 and it will not switch off properly. Whenever I shut the laptop down normally or in safe mode the screen will go black (as expected) but the power light will always remain on. I have to hold the power button down in order to switch it off completely. Restarting it is not a problem. Does anybody have any idea what's wrong?

Check this link.

Answer appears to be removing and reinstalling the CMOS battery inside the laptop. You will then start with a "clean" BIOS in the CMOS chip. The CMOS data can become corrupted.
Best to try some of the other recommendatrions first, as they don't involve taking the laptop apart.

How exactly are you shutting it down?

Start, shut down. no matter how long I leave it it just doesn't completely switch off the power light remains on. Only way to switch it off is to hold the power button down for 5 secs

I have just recently been experiencing the exact same problem you described with my Dell Inspiron N5110. A solution would be much appreciated! :)

Finally found the time to take it apart and removed and reinstalled the battery and it now works. Thanks for your help!
