Precision M40 memory upgrade to 1GB

Hi everyone,

although DELL does not support this, I want to upgrade my trusty old M40 to 1GB memory. I already have the modules but the system as it is does not accept them when installed. I am referring to two 512MB modules, type Kingston ValueRAM. The M40 runs on the last officially DELL-supported BIOS, namely A11.

Question is, can I upgrade to a later BIOS (like the A12 for the M50) and thereby get beyond the 512MB border of the A11 BIOS? Which BIOS version would I need?

And has anyone successfully done something similar?

TIA,

Carsten

Carsten,

The Precision M40 support maximum 512MB.

The latest bios version is A11.

I don't believe that updated the bios version you can get beyond of 512MB.

Carsten,

You should not update your BIOS with that of another machine.  The M50 is different hardware, and the BIOS will not work on the M40.  You should only install an M40 BIOS.  512MB is the maximum RAM for that system.
