Problem trying to switch hard drive from Studio 1737 to Studio 1747? Can't Boot.
Hey all --
I'm trying to switch drives from a Dell Studio 1737 to a Dell Studio 1747.
I have an existing Dell Studio 1737 that runs on a SSD with Windows 10 installed. It runs fine.
Yesterday, I bought a Dell Studio 1747 that has a regular HD with Windows 7 installed. It runs fine.
I tried switching the SSD from the 1737 to the main hard drive bay in the 1747, but when I tried to boot, I get a repeating PXE-MOF: existing PXR ROM and PXE-E61: Media Test Failure error. It just repeats over and over again.
I've switched drives before, and have never had this problem. Any suggestions? Are SSDs not compatible with a 1747 or something?

EcceBen,
Unfortunately, these systems were never validated by Dell to work with Windows 10. You should try looking in the bios to see if the computer recognizes the hard drive you added. Also, you would need to format and reinstall Windows on the other system because the hardware in the 1737 is different from the 1747. You cannot add a hard drive with an OS installed on it to another computer and expect it to work.
For me to better assist in troubleshooting, please click my DELL-Jesse L and send me a Private Message with the Dell Service Tag number and your Dell Order number.

The first thing to check is that the BIOS recognizes the drive -- F2 at powerup. If it doesn't, make sure the drive is securely mounted. Both these systems are desgned for 9.5 mm drive - and most SSDs are 7 mm, so you may need a spacer to mount one.
The other thing to check is that the drive setup is the same on both systems - i.e., ATA, AHCI or RAID. If one is different from the other, the drive won't boot. It sounds more likely the drive isn't even being seen by the system (i.e., check the first item first).

Thanks for the suggestions, everyone. I tried switching out a regular HD into the 1747's bay and it recognized it fine. So it seems like it's just the SSD that's the issue for me. I'm going to investigate some spacers because I love the OS being on a SSD -- makes startup time a lot quicker!

Still confounded with this SSD --
I don't think a spacer is the issue, as the 1747's internal hard drive caddy for bay one screws into the SSD fine, and fits into the bay without issue.
I did the F2 BIOS diagnostic and the drive appears listed as recognized there as well.
I'm going to try booting from bay two and see if that will work. Otherwise, I'll just try installing the SSD into bay one, and booting from my Windows installation USB and reinstalling everything (which is a pain, because the last time I had to do that, it took a month for Microsoft to reactivate Windows for me!)
