Provided you install approve type and capacity the Memory is considered "user serviceable" and will not impact your service warranty

Check the following link to get an idea of the type of memory your Vostro 2420 laptop support - http://accessories.us.dell.com/sna/category.aspx?category_id=8136&c=us&l=en&s=dfb&cs=28&mfgpid=225569&Tab=Parts&stype=2
You would need two 4GB modules for max. According to Dell store even DDR3-1600MHz work fine with your system. Good Luck!!
