Rebooting an Inspiron 6000 notebook without recovery OS disk

Question

I wish to reboot my laptop, however i have lost the recovery OS disk, is there an alternative method i could take?   Your help will be very much appreciated.   Neil.

If you mean restore, not reboot, yes, you can use the quick restore (CTRL-F11 at the Dell screen).

Back up all data first, as it will be lost.

Will this method work if a new (larger) hard drive is installed (i.e. to replace the old one), or are the files etc. necessary for this hidden away on the disk drive somewhere? Julie

Hi Julie If you install a new hard drive the restore or the utility partition will not be on the new drive ! You may be able to clone the old drive to the new drive and have it work that way . I know the utility partition and the PC Restore partition on a Vista computer can be cloned but i do not know if it will work for a XP computer!!  Good Luck

Thanks. I thought that would be the case, but later came across another posting that said that actually you can use the old disk in a (USB) caddy and restore it that way (with caveats something to do with using the music player without the PC running, which I never use and didn't even know it could do).
