Replacing Inspiron 15R - N5110 Optical drive with SSD

Hello there, Did anyone tried Samsung SSD 850 Pro on their Dell Inspiron 15R N5110 as a primary HDD or as an optical drive with caddy. I am planning to buy Samsung SSD 850 pro, your help is highly appreciated.

Thanks in advance!

It is safer to make an image of the existing drive to a USB drive, replace the drive, or do a direct clone (you'll need an external USB case to hold one drive while you clone it).

Whatever you do, DO NOT boot the system after cloning until the new SSD is mounted as the ONLY drive in the system - i.e., DON'T boot the system with the SSD mounted externally or in the drive caddy.

Replacing the hard drive will work - using an optical drive adapter will also, as long as you plan on using the SSD for storage only (you cannot use the drive mounted in such an adapter as a boot drive).

Thank you ejn63 for your quick reply.

Is it possible to mount SSD in a caddy, migrate OS to SSD and replace HDD with SSD?

If that works, I can use my SSD as boot drive post migration and HDD as Storage drive.

thank you very much EJN63. i purchased samsung 840 EVO 250GB SSD and a HDD caddy from an online store. initially had problem with cloning o/s from my HDD to SSD, Samsung migration software is a total waste. Installed WD migration software. configured SSD as boot drive and added old HDD into optical drive. now my laptop is super fast with 250gb ssd + 750 hdd .
