Reviving Dell Inspiron 8600 from sleep mode

When my Dell Inspiron (IE brownser, 2000 operating system) goes into sleep mode, Usually just a brief press on the power button will wake it up.  Lately, that does not work, pressing anything and everything dows not work, then I must completely power off, and then on again, which is very time consuming. 

Any tips on what would work better?
