Screen dims when plugged in and bright when on battery!

inspiron e1405. Windows XP SP2
new behavior just started happening today. The monitor dimmer is displaying the reverse of expected behavior. When the laptop is plugged in and the battery is charging, the screen gets dimmer. When on battery power, the screen gets brighter! The battery icon displays correctly, however (a battery when on battery, a plug when plugged in), and the detailed information on the battery in the power meter shows the correct status as well.
Any ideas what could be causing this? Rebooting with the battery in / out or the plug in / out in various permutations has not fixed the problem.
Thanks,
Drew

when the computer is starting Press F2 and check in the battery health for the adapter and the battery status . In the BIOS under the Video option you can change the brightness settings for the battery and also when plugged on the adapter Press ESC and click on the Save / EXIT . I think u wont have this problem after changing this settings.. In case if u want to change the settings in windows hold the Fn key down and press the up and down arrow keys

Do you have QuickSet on your PC? If so, or to see, go to your system tray and see if there is a QS (blue/yellow) icon. If so click i tgoto POWER MGMT. WIZARD> next> Edit scheme>DISPLAY BRIGHTNESS>(select plugged in brightness 5 being the most) and whatever u want for the batt. Hope it helps.
