Sigmatel and stereo mix

I own a Dell XPS M1210 laptop equipped with a sigmatel audio card. Unfortunately, the factory installed driver of said audio card seems to have the "stereo mix" option disabled, meaning that I can't record what my computer is playing. I've done a bit of research into the problem, and it seems that all dell computers have this problem. I found a number of solutions, mostly involving installing fully functional drivers, that seem to work for most people. However, none of these drivers work for me. I just get code 10. Does anyone know how I can un-disable this functionality? Thank you for your time.

We know of 2 ways, but neither works for all models. The easiest is to use an LG Sigmatel driver which has the functional stereo mix. But a poster once wrote that it didn't work for his M1210; however recently a poster did install it successfully on an M1710. If you want instructions for it I need to know your operating system.

The other way follows. Go down to the bottom and read 'other models'.

============================================================
============================================================

There is a very long thread at notebookforums.com called "Hacking SigmaTel Drivers for E1705/9400, i need knowledgable helpers", started by Veazer. Another poster working with him, falerus, found that he could unlock a number of controls and features in the SigmaTel audio driver by modifying a certain inf file in the R122161 audio driver. Building on falerus's ideas, eddiep, cais, and EagleGT modified inf files for other Dell laptops that also use the SigmaTel 92xx audio chip and R122161 driver.

Following are the laptop models, links to the modified inf files, and instructions for completing the hack. (These are falerus's instructions that I have modified a bit.)

E1705/9400 and Precision M90:

1. Look at falerus's post (#62 on page 5 of the thread) for his link to a modified 92XXM2-3.ini file. The link is right under the words "Attached Files". You will need to register to get it, then download and unzip it.

falerus inf file for E1705

2. Uninstall your SigmaTel driver through Add/Remove programs and download the Dell R122161 SigmaTel driver for XP. (The R122161 is the particular driver that was hacked. Windows Vista users should also use it.)

R122161 driver

3. Run the file. It will unpack the files to the location you specify and then start to install the driver. Cancel the InstallShield installation.
4. Go to the folder where the files were unpacked and browse to the "WDM" folder (C:\Dell\drivers\R122161\WDM).
5. Copy the modified 92XXM2-3.ini into that WDM folder, overwriting the existing one.
6. Go back up one folder to "R122161" (C:\Dell\drivers\R122161).
7. Double click and run Setup.exe. (You might want to turn off your antivirus program first.) The new installation puts a full featured SigmaTel audio control panel in the Windows Control Panel.
8. Restart
9. To enable Stereo Mix, go to Control Panel/Sounds, open the record tab, right click to display disabled devices then right click the Stereo Mix entry and enable it.

E1505/6400:

1. Look at eddiep's post (#235 on page 16 of the thread) for his link to the modified 92XXM2-5.ini file. You will need to register to get it, then download and unzip it.

eddiep's inf file for E1505

2. Follow the instructions for the E1705 above starting with step 2. In step 5 copy the modified 92XXM2-5.ini into the WDM folder, overwriting the existing one.

E1405/640m:

1. Look at falerus's post (#290 on page 20 of the thread) for his link to the modified 92XXM2-1.ini file. You will need to register to get it, then download and unzip it.

2. Follow the instructions for the E1705 above starting with step 2. In step 5 copy the modified 92XXM2-1.ini into the WDM folder, overwriting the existing one.

Latitude D620 and D820:

1. Look at EagleGT's post (#306 on page 21 of the thread) for his link to the modified 92XXM2-2.ini file. You will need to register to get it, then download and unzip it.

EagleGT inf file for D620

2. Follow the instructions for the E1705 above starting with step 2. In step 5 copy the modified 92XXM2-2.ini into the WDM folder, overwriting the existing one.

Other Models:

The above inf files, 92XXM2-1 -2 -3 & -5, are the only ones that have been modified so far. One or more of these might apply to a model of computer other than the ones listed above. For example, someone reported that the hack worked on a M1710, but I wasn't sure which modified inf file he used; I think the -3 one for the 1705. Cais gives some instructions for figuring out which inf file is used in post #292 on page 20 of the "Hacking SigmaTel Drivers" thread.

The following models are the rest of the Dell's that are compatible with the R122161 driver. If you have one of these models it is worthwhile to try out the different modified inf files in step 5 of the above instructions and see if one of them works for you.

B120, 1300/B130, M140/630m, D420, D520, 120L, M65, XPS M1210 & M1710 & M2010

These have the SigmaTel 92xx HD audio chip. The hack will not work on any model with the SigmaTel STAC 97xx chip.

Post #404 on page 27 by hunnja gives some complicated instructions for the Inspiron 1501 model.
The 1501 instructions reportedly also work for the Inspiron E1405 model.

Well... I just have found out a way to enable "stereo mix" on newer notebooks (I have a "Vostro 1500" - bought in August this year). I don't know if this works on MS Vista - I am more in Windows XP... Okay... -I downloaded the SigmaTel driver for WinXP from the official Dell website and installed it. When it prompted me to "restart the computer", I opted for "restart it myself later" - Then I opened the windows registry and searched for "stereomix" - After a few seconds I landed in a folder with "DigitalStereoMix" - Doubleclicked on it and changed the last two digits from "00" to "01" - Restarted my notebook, looked into my "Audio properties" under "Recording" and... (sorry for my english - I'm german ;)

The computer in question is running XP. Hmm. None of the ini's worked, and searching the registry for "DigitalStereoMix" came up with nothing. Might the XPS M1210 be running a different chipset? If it proves not to be possible to solve this problem, does anyone know if there's some sort of workaround? For example, I know of a program called Total Recorder which installs some sort of placebo sound card driver that allows it to capture stereo mix. Is there some sort of driver like that that I could install?

Hmmm... maybe trying to add it into the registry yourself could help?! Here's where I found mine: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/SYSTEM/ControlSet001/Control/Class/

{4D36E96C-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318} - the 13th from above

/0005/Settings/filter/rear

There you'll have to right-click "new/binary", so that a new, unnamed binary value comes up.

Rename this one to "DigitalStereoMix", double-click on it and type in "01" so the field looks like "0000 01".

Let's see if this works. ;)

That worked! Almost. Now I have the "Stereo mix" option, but it doesn't actually work.

Describe how you noticed that it doesn't work.... After I activated stereomix in the sound-tab I tested it with Nero WaveEditor and a Shoutcast Net-Radio - it worked.

Stereo mix is now displayed as an option, but when I try to record with it while, for example playing a song on iTunes, I just get a flat line. At the moment I am using the driver with the hacked 92XXM2-3 ini.

Maybe that's the problem. I modified the registry after I installed the original driver from the Dell website, without putting in the modified ini-file afterwards.

There are now new drivers for the Sigmatel sound cards on Windows XP. Description says "New installer + Stereo Mix"...

DragonQ,

Thanks for the heads up. That driver just came out on Tuesday and I had not yet noticed it. I hope you and sosaysthecaptain will try it out and give us a report on whether or not you get stereo mix in the recording control panel. Man, if it works it's going to make a lot of people happy.

The new driver is Sigmatel R171789 and it looks like it replaces the venerable R122161. The models it can work on in Windows 2000 and XP are:

I have the Inspiron 1720 notebook with the same STAC 92xx C-Major HD so I thought couldn't hurt.  I created a restore point and gave it a try just to see if it works with Vista (yes I know it doesn't list that in the driver description but we all want that darn stereo/wave out option it seems).  And no it doesn't.  It gets to the point where it tells you, that it's not the right driver for this system.

So back to waiting waiting waiting for the Vista vs. of this release, if in fact it does include the stereo mix option that is.

I have a question about another driver and please excuse my "just learning" knowledge.  I found the Vista vs. of a Creative Labs Integrated Sound Blaster Audigy ADVANCED HD Audio driver.  Will that work with my Sigmatel audio?  I believe it redirects you to purchase the registration for $19.99 which I'm happy to pay.  I want to make sure it would be compatible with the audio driver I have now before i do though.

Thank you in advance for the help.

This is pretty far off topic but here goes.

The Creative software is an enhancement to the Sigmatel audio system, and it consists of 2 parts:

The Invitation. This is the part that demos the software, links you to the download of the application, and the payment. The application works in conjunction with

The Audigy driver that you referred to.

I don't know if the version you found works with your 1720. Normally when Dell offers this as an aftermarket item the Invitation and Audigy driver are on your download page under the Audio category, but they are not listed for yours.

You can go to the page of the driver you found and at the bottom of the page it should have a link to a list of models it is compatible with.

That clears it up, to know that the Creative software is an enhancement to the Sigmatel audio system.  I won't know until I try I suppose and at worst I'm out 20 bucks.  Small price to pay for what I would love to have the option for.

Thank you very much for your response and help, now and in the past.  I appreciate it.

The new driver, (which, btw, you can get at http://support.us.dell.com/support/downloads/download.aspx?c=us&cs=19&l=en&s=dhs&releaseid=R171789&formatcnt=1&libid=0&fileid=235761) works on my XPS 1210 which for the record is running XP. So happy to get this problem solved! Many thanks to all of you!
