Sound Blaster Audigy 2 NX External USB or PCMCIA version
Any big differences or bugs which would make 1 or the other the better one to choose, just using it for some new games out. I take it the USB one needs a power supply and the PCMCIA does not. Oh this is for a 8600. Thanks

There are some popping issues with DVD-Audio disks and on some rare occasions in games, however these are being looked into by Creative and overall the card is fantastic.

Thanks ya I get some popping with stock Sig sound card too kind of odd maybe something else then is the culprit effecting the sound cards.

The sound is great but whenever I burn CDs using my external Firewire burner, I have to remove the Audigy card. Otherwise there is some kind of SCSI interface error and I get coasters. I also have an external Firewire hard drive for backups and as yet, I have not seen an error. However, I will be removing the Audigy card prior to using it from this point forward.

Creative does state that no power adapter is needed for their usb Live! card, but I couldn't find a similar claim for their Audigy2NX. If you go to this page near the bottom is a pic of the rear of the unit and there seems to be a connection for a wall wart on the far right of the back panel.

An interesting fact is that their discontinued Mp3+ card which normally did not require a power adapter, would not work on the 8600 or the XPS unless it was plugged into a powered usb port. We all thought the usb ports were underpowered but I finally found a Soundblaster faq that claimed the ports were 'timing out' before the cards could get powered up. Don't know if they got that ironed out with usb Live! or not.
