Studio 17, T9600 1GHZ FSB, with 800MHz memory?

Hi,

I'm looking at buying a Studio 17 with a dual-core T9600.  This cpu has a 1GHz (1066MHz) FSB, yet the memory that is selectable for the laptop on the dell site is only 800MHz.

How does this work - surely the memory communicates with the cpu through the FSB, which according to the dell site, is clocked at 1066MHz, yet the site also says the memory is clocked at 800MHz.  So either the FSB going to be waiting a few clocks, or down-speeding to 800MHz?  Or am I missing something?  Any ideas?

Other than that, the laptop sounds good to me.  1920x1200, HDMI, numpad keyboard, and dual-core to get the virus-scanner off my back.

I guess I'll still go with the T9600 then.

Thanks very much for the explanation, much appreciated.

Intel doesn't have a mobile chipset capable of running RAM at 1066 MHz - in fact, Intel's mobile chipsets almost univerasally run RAM at a slower bus speed than desktop chipsets, for a variety of reasons including battery runtime, RF emissions, and heat dissipation.

If you want a synchronous memory bus, you'll need a desktop - they don't exist in the mobile Centrino world.

It's just one of the trade-offs you make for the sake of portability.

Hi, did you have any luck with the T9600?

Hi,

Yeah, I had that laptop for a while, it was my first dual core laptop.  I loved the 17" screen of the Studio 17. Powerful enough for software development without a virus scanner kicking in and consuming 100% cpu.  The memory wasn't a problem.

The Studio 17 was cast off to the girlfriend when I got a quad core i7 Latitude.  Smaller screen having finally admitted the futility of spending a hefty premium for a 17" 1920x1200 display that'll just be discarded every 2 years.  Shame.
