Studio 1737 (4.5 years old) Failing To Boot
Hi,
We have a 4.5 year old Dell Studio 1737.
When I turn it on:
- the power light comes on
- the media lights cycle up and down
- the disk light comes on briefly
- I hear the optical drive initialize and whir faintly
- nothing else!
Nothing appears on the display and the fan doesn't start spinning. There's a feint whir which I think is from the optical drive.
If I hold down the D key and power on:
- the power light comes on
- the display flashes once fairly brightly followed by further very feint periods of illumination (barely visible!)
- the media lights cycle up and down
- and that's about it again!
I'm thinking it may be the display that's gone. Any advice would be gratefully received.

sounds more like your hard drive has died
F12 Dell Diagnostics at bootup

Thanks for the suggestion. F12 doesn't seem to make any difference. Exactly the same symptoms whether I press F12 or not.

Unplug the system and remove battery. Hold the power button for 30 sec. Remove and reinstall the hard drive. Verify that the LED on the AC adapter (or DC end of the cord) is on - if it's not, the adapter is bad. Replace it.
Power up on AC only - if it powers up, then install the battery. If powers up without but not with the battery, the battery is bad - replace it.
If it still won't power up, remove the hard drive. If it'll then power up, the drive is bad.
If you still get nothing, the mainboard is bad.

Thanks for that tried them all - no good. Looks like it may be the main board then.
Should the fan spin up straight away? The fan never starts but I'm not sure if it should start at power-on or later in the boot sequence?

Hi Andy5melt,
Please connect an external monitor to the system to check if there is any display on the external monitor. If there is any display on the monitor, the LCD of the system needs to replace. If there is no display, the motherboard needs to be replaced.
Please check and reply for further help.
