Studio XPS 1640 hard drive upgrade

Question

I want to upgrade the hard drive in my XPS 1640 to a new SSD. I'm looking at the following and wanted to know if it is compatible with my laptop. Any help in this matter will be greatly appreciated.

Should be fine, though as above, the system doesn't support 6G SATA, so it'll run at half its rated speed.

You can do either, but even if you clone the drive, you may face an activation request - I have seen that happen even when you clone from one drive to another in the same system. Usually as long as you haven't activated recently, the online activation will work just fine.

Yes, though bear in mind that your system is SATA 3G, so the drive won't run at SATA 6G speeds.

For heating and speed reasons, I am looking at replacing my hard drive with the Kingston V300 240GB 2.5' 7mm SATA III SSD. Would it be compatible with my Studio XPS 1640? Thanks.

Thanks. One more question: I have the original Windows 8 professional disk since I upgraded myself from Vista. Should I start with a clean install on the SSD or is it better to go with a mirror copy of my current HDD? I am now running 8.1 and have a few more programs installed which I can reinstall later, but I am wondering if Microsoft will accept a new windows 8 install with a license that has already been used on the existing HDD? I am sure a clean install will take a lot more time too...
