Synaptics driver update for Dell Touchpad - Error 0x80070103

I have upgraded my XPS 13 (9343) to Windows 10 today but when I try to do WIndows update I get this error.

Synaptics driver update for Dell Touchpad - Error 0x80070103

Anyone having the same issue?

I had the exact same problem with my Dell Inspiron 14 3451.

I was unable to get any Dell Synaptics driver to install at all after upgrading to Windows 10. No matter how I tried to install (see below), I never got a Synapics Driver to appear in the Device Manager, nor under Programs and Features. The Windows Update installs always gave me Error 0x80070103, and the manual installs always said they had successfully installed the driver, although there was no sign of it.

I tried reverting back to Windows 8.1 and reinstalling the latest drivers - failed.

I tried a clean install to Windows 10 and reinstalling via Windows Update - failed.

I tried downloading the drivers from the Dell web site (not just the latest, but older versions as well) - failed.

I tried using different BIOS versions (A00 and A04) - failed.

I tried installing when running under the legacy (non-UEFI) BIOS - failed.

In the end, the only thing that worked was (after a clean Windows 10 install), installing the Lenovo Windows 10 Synaptics drivers from here:  http://support.lenovo.com/us/en/downloads/DS032247

Download and extract the zip file then navigate to the WinWDF\x64 folder and run Setup.exe

Now I have a working Synaptics touchpad complete with edge scrolling, two-finger scrolling momentum, etc., etc. I'm quite happy with the way this Lenovo driver works with my Synaptics Touchpad and I'll probably stick with it.

No luck with the lenovo drivers

I tried the DELL (19.0.15.2) driver and the windows update error still persists.

I just got off the phone with Microsoft L2 support.  They are aware of this as a problem (apparently, it is a problem on multiple platforms and not only Dell).  No ETA on a fix.  I'm contacting Dell Pro support next.

On the Microsoft Insider forum, this is a problem on multiple platforms (I have a Venue Pro 11, I saw comments on the XPS as well as Inspiron).

Belltown, Thanks for your efforts and post! Concise and right to the point. You saved me a lot of time of which is hella scarce. Much appreciated!

If they know about it, and are working on  it, what's the point of continuuing to contact support.  Ultimately, it sounds like only Microsoft can fix this, and it's not that big of a problem, the only negative to me is that i can't get a message my system is up to date, because windows update always has this error, otherwise there is no real problem, it's aesthetics.

BTW - Thanks for sharing that they know about it because we don't get much 'official' feedback on this forum here.

I agree with your comment of importance.  I just like to follow every possible avenue.  Sometimes you end up with someone who knows something.  I have Dell Pro support, which jumps me over their L1/L2 and right to our peeps that know how to solve problems.  Even if you don't find a fix, you can share with others in the community and help save their sanity.  :-)

Microsoft didn't much want to deal with me.  I started out for 40 minutes on the phone with L1 (UGH) just so I could say "now escalate me to L2".  L2 called me back the next day (this morning).  First and second thing that popped out of his mouth was "call Dell" and "rollback to Windows 8.1" (seriously, roll back after spending 2 days upgrading and configuring and tweaking so finally everything is working perfectly (and I am comfortable with the new UI) except this nagging update error????).  After 5 minutes of trying to get him to acknowledge that this isn't a Dell issue (they didn't push the driver) I gave up and said I wanted to speak to his manager.  I repeated my previous 5 minutes, and finally the manager admitted they knew it was a problem, it was a problem on many platforms (not just Dell) and they didn't know when they were going to have a fix.

I have a Venue Pro 11, XPS Touch and Inspiron 14R.  The Pro is good to go, the XPS and 14R are next in line. ...  Wish me luck!  :emotion-3:  At least I kept a running document of everything that was necessary, down to registry tweaks, to end up a happy Windows 10 user!!!!

I got the Synaptics driver to work on my Alienware 13 with Windows 10 64-bit. Let me try to summarize a few days of activity:

  • I went to this site to upgrade to Windows 10 without waiting.
  • The upgrade completed without too much incident. Biggest issue was that I had to hook up to my network using Ethernet after the upgrade finished because a) my Wi-Fi connection would not work, and therefore b) I couldn't download new drivers.
  • After fiddling around with driver upgrades, everything was working, including my touchpad. However, the touchpad had a warning symbol next to it in Device Manager, and I could not access the touchpad properties in the advanced mouse settings.
  • I tried all of these files:
    • Synaptics_v17_0_19_C_XP32_Vista32_Win7-32_XP64_Vista64_Win7-64_Acme_Inc.zip from the Synaptics web site.
    • Alienware-13_Input_Driver_KTNPR_WN_18.1.32.8_A00.EXE from the Dell / Alienware web site.
    • Alienware-13_Input_Driver_82MM0_WN64_19.0.15.2_A00.EXE from the Dell / Alienware web site.
    • h1ty07ww.zip from the Lenovo website (mentioned earlier in the thread by someone else).
  • None of the above exhibited very dfferent behavior, except that the Lenovo file would not install at all.
  • However, one thing worth noting is that, as others have mentioned, the Dell / Alienware site said that my version of Windows was not supported. Here's a screenshot of that warning: http://screencast.com/t/gLnEsr1WO
    • Ironically, if you click on the link for supported operating systems, "Windows 10 , 64-bit" is the first one on the list.
  • The reason this is worth noting is that this message distracted me from seeing that I had originally left the operating system selector set to Windows 8.1, 64-bit. Therefore, I had downloaded several Windows 8.1 drivers instead of Windows 10 drivers. At this point, only the touchpad was showing a warning in Device Manager, so I decided to "reset" the touchpad as much as I could, and just give it another go.
    • I did this by right-clicking the touchpad in Device Manager and choosing "Uninstall", and then telling Windows to also uninstall the driver software for this device. I did this repeatedly, and had to reboot several times. I may have also gone into the properties for the touchpad and told it to "roll back" the driver.
    • Sorry I didn't take notes - I had no idea I was going to succeed! I'm trying to post this while I remember as much as I can.
    • Anyway, after everything was deleted, the situation was that there was no touchpad showing in Device Manager at all. However, the touchpad was working. It had only its basic functionality - no multi-touch anything, and no touchpad properties in the Mouse properties dialog.
    • At that point:
      • I rebooted again.
      • I installed the Alienware-13_Input_Driver_82MM0_WN64_19.0.15.2_A00.EXE from the Dell / Alienware web site again.
      • I rebooted again (again).
      • And everything works!

Current screenshot of Device Manager, showing many of the Alienware-specific components, in case the display names help anyone: http://screencast.com/t/jNcI6dXn

Current screenshot of the touchpad tab of the mouse properties dialog, just to show that yes, it really works: http://screencast.com/t/LtQoSPSM71

Current screenshot of what loads when you click the "Click to change Touchpad settings" link (ie: where the good stuff is): http://screencast.com/t/5kgeTxhm

I hope that this information, although not well-organized, helps someone else solve the problem. Maybe the next person can take better notes!

Cheers,
SQL Sith

Same issue here, with the daily nag of failed 'Synaptics driver update for Dell Touchpad - Error 0x80070103' on a Dell venue 11 pro with the slim keyboard.

But I might be lucky, since my slim keyboard somehow uses some Microsoft drivers and looks to be working. Likely I lost some extra gestures but the basic/standard windows 10 gestures works.

I have to say that I did do a complete reinstall of windows 10 after upgrading. After the upgrade I had the same problems with the touch panel not working. The reinstall of windows 10 installed the MS drivers which worked. Only it keeps trying to install the Synaptics drivers which fails daily.

Use the following Link to download Windows 10 utility that will allow you to block Windows Device Driver updates: (basically hide Synaptics from the list of updated devices) You can wait till the issue is resolved and not be bugged by the installation error in Windows Update
