USB Boot not working on XPS 15Z (bought in 2011)
Hey guys,
I'm having trouble to boot on a USB Drive with my XPS 15Z that I bought in 2011.
What I'm doing:
- I'm creating a bootable USB drive with Rufus of Ubuntu OS
- The USB is bootable through MobaLive CD and is also bootable on another laptop (not DELL)
- I try to boot it with my laptop, but the USB is not recognized
What I've tried to do:
- I updated my L511Z BIOS to version A12
- I tried to play around with BIOS settings but there aren't many settings I can tweak
- I tried to see if my USB was recognized as a Hard Drive but it's not the case
- I even tried to disable Secure Booting but there are not options for that in the BIOS
Does anyone know how I can boot on my USB Drive ?

Hi,
I've been having the same problem on 2 Dell 15z laptops so wanted to post to help.
I discovered a setting in the BIOS needs to be enabled "USB wake up". It is disabled by default.
Then select to boot from "removable USB device" and it will work in any of the USB ports.
You get the trusty message "press any key to boot from USB"
This drove me mad until I solved it. Hope it helps.

My two Dell 15Z laptops had the same problem. I finally got it to boot using the below settings:

Enable "USB Wake Up" from the second page in the BIOS. It is disabled by default.
Plug your USB into the USB2/eSata port
When booting select F12 to change the boot order and select "USB storage device"
