USB to serial convertor Device Driver to hook up to cisco/any router for terminal emulation

I use this little adapter from StarTech products and have successful results managing my Cisco switch through my 5100 laptop using terminal server.

I have it working with the hyperterm, but some times i get crashdumps thats why am looking for a reliable driver.

What driver do you use? or are you telling that just the convertor cable worked for you?

Hi George,

For most apps, I only needed the converter cable (like older PDAs with ActiveSync).

But for the Cisco switch I use the driver that StarTech provides for it's converter (found on their website). It adds an entry in Device Manager under the USB root hub (named USB to Serial Link) and applications using the serial port see it as an independant RS-232 port, the USB port is transparent to them.

I use it a lot and get minimal errors (almost none, I think I had like 1-2 errors in one year's use).

What I had trouble with however is an older DOS application that uses the RS-232 port to control a machine. That application still gives me a lot of trouble (just can't hold the connection) and I am currently using another laptop to do this job.... (If you ever find a nice generic USB to Serial driver please let me know !)

Belkin has a USB to Serial Converter that My boss uses for his winxp laptop (non-dell) which doesn't have a Serial(RS232) port
