Unable to download updates
When I search Dell I get a long list of updates I need to install, however, when I select one for install the screen is covered in a clear gray window and an error message appears in the very bottom of the screen. I have an Inspiron E1705 laptop that is 3 years old; is a 3 year old computer to old to download these updates? Also I recently wiped my hard drive and reinstalled my software...
Can anyone help???

Renee12,
The Desktop/Notebook Utility needs to be installed first(if applicable), then the chipset drivers. If they are NOT installed first, then the rest of the drivers will fail to install.
How to Install Drivers in Microsoft® Windows® on Dell Systems
Since the operating system was re-installed did you remember to go to drivers and downloads, enter your service tag(DO NOT POST SERVICE TAG here or your post will get deleted, since it contains your personal information), and install these drivers in this order.
:emotion-55: Hint :emotion-55: When downloading the drivers, make a folder for each drivers and name it with the device it belongs with to make it easier to install them in the proper order.
Desktop System Software or Notebook System Software(if applicable)
Chipset or SMBus driver
Processor Driver (if applicable)
Video
Audio (sound)
Input Drivers (keyboard/mouse)
Modem
Network Card
QuickSet(Laptop only)

Renee,
You need to download and install the Dell Notebook System Software then the Intel Mobile Chipset and the Ricoh R5C832
Then the other drivers will install. These MUST be done first.
The rest of the drivers can be downloaded from Drivers & Downloads by entering your service tag number.
Network Drivers
Broadcom 440x 10/100 Integrated Controller
and you'll need the driver for the wireless card you have.

Yes, I did read that and I may have tried before reading, but I could never get that far. What now??
Oh, and thank you for your speedy response, it's nice to know someone is out there! I appreciate any help you can provide.
Thank you, Renee

Rick, yes, thank you, I have tried to do just that and I get the grayed over screen with caution symbol next to Done at the bottom and no matter how long I wait, nothing happens - no download - no message... just grayed over screen.
I did request a set of Dell backup discs yesterday and recieved them today (great service, thank you Dell) and a Drivers and Utilities disc is included. I'm not sure how to proceed - I am curious to know why I am unable to use the downloads from Dell.com; could installing the disc restore this option for me?
I welcome any advice and I will wait before proceeding.
Thanks, Renee

Renee,
I still do not know what operating system you have, as there are different routes we can use. XP is esaier than Vista.

Renee12,
We're going to try repairing Xp without losing any files and folders.
Insert the operating system disk and restart your computer.
Press any key to boot from CD.
Choose install.
Do the agreement.
Now choose repair. Heave the disk in until you see the Welcome Screen. Takes about 35 minuter. Now you'll need to get all the Windows updates again(more painful) The system should be back to the way it was when purchased without losing any files and folders.
I do always preach to ALWAYS make copies of files and folders that you cannot afford to lose.

I have Windows Vista 64 with Microsoft Explorer 8 running on a number of Dell laptops. When using support.dell.com my screen would go grey whenever I clicked download for any of the driver or software updates. After dealing with Dell for two hours on the phone with mulitple changes and reboots we found the problem.
Dell's support site has a compatibility issue with some computers running Explorer 8. How we got around the issue was by first tunring on the menu bar (click - tools/toolbars/menu bar) and then selecting TOOLS Compatability View and add the dell.com site. Once this change was made we were able to download drivers and software.
I hope this helps someone else.

You just helped me--it would be nice if Dell noted they have a problem with IE8--better yet, they should fix it!
