Using D-Link Air DWL-650 Wireless Cardbus, not able to connect to internet...
I am trying to get connection to the internet using the D-Link wireless card. I have automatic config for LAN connection. The connections try to find proxy settings but then I get the usual error message "Page cannot be displayed." I removed and reinstalled the card, tcp/ip protocol, etc...but nothing successful has happend.
I went into the CMD and did IP/CONFIG, it came up with my address as 169.254.163.22. I'ved read that this address will not give me access to the internet. How come and how can I correct this problem? I am using a Dell Laptop CPi A series. BIOS version A05 Physical address is 00-0D-88-C7-6B-16.
I would appreciate helping me with this. I just need to connect to the internet and have this laptop available for clients at my job. I am a systems admin working in a network structure that loves to go up and down, while customers complain about the connectivity on the desktops. So with our wireless set up, people with wireless cards can access the internet easily due to no restrictions from us until our migration to 2003 server.
Please help! LOL

Have you checked the service WZCSVC on your client.
Wireless Zero Configuration - Provides automatic configuration for the 802.11 adapters
It should be runing in order to find the card, and provided you are running XP.
Sometimes this service is stopped to save resources.

Thanks for responding. Where would I go to check the WZCSVC on my laptop? I am running W2K. I got connection today but then when the signal gets weak, it will either slow down or stop returning an ip address that states the DHCP cannot be contacted. This happens everytime. Is there something that I can do to my laptop to make sure I don't lose the ip address I get from automatic ip addressing via DHCP? Thanks a lot

Since you are running w2k and connected, the service could nok be the problem.
But the signal is not strong, how far is it from the base could there be other wireless close by
