VOSTRO 1710 GeForce 8600M GS DEAD
Hi,
My VOSTRO 1710 graphic card (GeForce 8600M GS) is dead, or I believe so : as soon as it starts (bios), my screen is split in two (horizontally).
I bought it on dell france website. Now I live in Bangkok. and I don't know where to fix it. (no warranty anymore).
Here are my questions if anyone can help : )
1) Can I change only the video card or the whole motherboard (any idea about the price).
2) If I can change only the card, is it specific to dell/vostro or any GeForce 8600M GS will do (or any else ? like 8600M GT ? :) )
3) I contacted a company here working with dell which is going to provide me a quotation next week, any alternative ?
4) Well, if you can help in any way ... thank you !!!
Regards :)
Aurelien

1. There is no separate video card - the mainboard needs to be replaced.
2. See #1.
3. There's no alternative to a mainboard replacement, and although you would likely have to return it to the country of purchase, there is a worldwide 1-year extension on the original warranty to cover the video chip failure:
http://en.community.dell.com/blogs/direct2dell/archive/2008/08/18/nvidia-gpu-update-dell-to-offer-warranty-enhancement-to-all-affected-customers-worldwide.aspx
If you have to pay for the repair yourself, realize that you'll get only a 90-day warranty and that most experts believe nVidia never really fixed the chips - that is, the replacement will likely fail in the future. Considering what a board replacement will cost, it's money better put toward a new notebook, not another nVidia 8600 replacement.

That was a quick answer, thanks !
I called Dell, they told me my card was after they fixed the problem, so I won't get the warranty extension ... I wonder how they fixed the chips ...
I will try to insist to the commercial who sold it to me, or sendd a letter ... otherwise it will cost me more than 400 €.
The point is I took almost the best one at that time and it is still really good fast and stable, I didn't plan to change before may be 2 years ... and I can't really afford it now !
I'll wait for their answer for now.
Thanks again for your help, and yes, if I I can't get the warranty I'll just buy a new one :(

If you use this laptop mainly at home you may be able to plug an external monitor into it and if the issue really isn't the graphics board you may have a temporary fix.

I"m afraid if it's the on-board video card which is defective, an external monitor won't do any good since it will use the same video. I have a 1710 with external monitor and am getting vertical bars again like the last time it happened and I had to get the motherboard replaced. I got a 2 in 1 tablet, so maybe I just need a new desktop.
