Vostro 1500 and 8 GB memory

Hello all

bought a cheap Vostro 1500 with 2 GB of ram.

My plan was to upgrade it to a sparetime CAD machine.

Allready had 8 GB (2x4 GB) DDR2 modules laying around from my Precision M6300.

I installed the first module of 4 GB in the machine without problems, but with both 4 GB modules inserted, the computer gets through 90% of the progress bar in the bootup procedure. I had it turned on for about an hour with no more luck.

So i swapped one of the modules with a 2 GB and now runs 6 GB with 64 bit Vista with success.

Is there any explenation on, why it will not run with both 4 GB modules ? As i recall, the i965 chipset supports up to 8 GB

No new bios released since A06

It's rated for 4G max, so getting the extra 2 is doing pretty well - going beyond what the hardware is designed for is always likely to produce unpredictable results.
