Vostro 3300 battery will not charge
I purchased a replacement battery specifically for the Vostro 3300 from Amazon, but it is not a genuine Dell battery.
The laptop power options states it is not compatible, and it will not charge.
I phoned Dell tech support and the person said to try to update the BIOS.
Then I read somewhere that you need a charged battery when updating BIOS. Can the BIOS be updated without a battery?

Hi gergev,
Check if the computer works on adapter connected directly without the battery.
During BIOS update, battery charging should be more than 10 %.
If the AC adapter is not recognized in the BIOS, the battery charging circuit is DISABLED by design (The system doesn’t know if there is sufficient power available to run the system and charge the battery).
Note: Some non-Dell batteries are available in the market with claims of compatibility with Dell systems. Dell cannot verify these claims, nor the safety of using them in a Dell system. Dell strongly encourages our customers to use only Dell laptop batteries advertised as appropriate for their laptop model. Only Dell laptop batteries come with a 1-year warranty, are engineered for optimal safety and performance for Dell systems, and are supported by Dell technical support for the length of the warranty period.
Please reply if you have any further questions.

Just a followup on my battery issue.
The Vostro 3300 did work on adapter connected directly without battery.
The BIOS, as it turns out, was already updated to the latest.
The adapter would not charge either the original Dell battery or the 3rd party (and much cheaper) replacement ordered on Amazon.
Luckily, I had opted to pay for the 3 year warranty and still had two years left on it.
Dell sent out somebody (I had onsite warranty, which was a pleasant surprise) within a few days.
The first thing the tech did was plug in his adapter, and that worked.
So the issue was that the original Dell adapter had gone bad.
Both batteries are now charging again. I'm out the cost of the Amazon replacement battery I did not need.
Too bad there isn't a better way to isolate the problem.
