[Vostro 3460] mSata replacement

Hello! I own a Vostro 3460 which has a Samsung 32GB mSATA built in. How ever I want to replace it with a Samsung 128GB mSATA.
I would like to know if it is possible, and if it is compatible. Note that the 32gb one has a 0.7A current, and the 128gb one has 1.25A current.

The answer for this is going to be very much appreciated!

You can find pictures of the devices below:

This is my current 32gb mSATA

this is the one I'm planning to buy (Samsung 128gb mSATA)

Well, I bought the device and it works perfectly so far on my Vostro 3460.

My old harddrive had an score of 5.9 on Windows Experience Index.

This new samsung 128gb msata has a score of 7.5.

I'm very glad it worked great!

Hi bisteca,

A 128GB mSata drive may or may not work on Vostro 3460 as Dell has only tested a 32GB mSata drive. You might have to check if it has worked for anyone else before purchasing the drive.

Hi tatam,

mSATA drives come with capacities ranging from 32GB,64GB,128GB & 256GB. The mSATA can be configured as a caching device or has regular hard drive. It’s recommended to use 32GB and 64GB mSATA drives as a caching device. 128GB and 256GB mSATA drives as regular hard drives. The advantage of mSATA drives is it’s faster than normal mechanical drives and cheaper than SSD drives. If you are using 128GB or 256GB mSATA drive you can go ahead and install Windows on it.

Hi Ravi,

"If you are using 128GB or 256GB mSATA drive you can go ahead and install Windows on it."

It mean: Can it boot as a normal mechanical drive?

Is there the mSATA a option? I am using Vostro 3460 (i3 3120, VGA on CPU). How to know the mSATA by software?

Thanks.

If you have an mSATA drive it'll show up in BIOS setup (F2 at powerup).  If you didn't order the system with one -- which is likely given the low-end nature of the i3 CPU - the drive won't be there, and on 15" models, the connector for the mSATA drive will not be present in the system.

Yes you can, that's exactly why I replaced the 32gb with the 128gb, and I did install Windows on it, and it works like a charm. You may have to do some workaround it, but YES, you can boot and install Windows on it.
