What remote can I use for the Studio SXPS 1340 Infrared Receiver? (other than Dell™ Travel Remote)
Hi all,
I have a Studio SXPS 1340. What IR remote can I use on this laptop? the only one I could find was the Dell™ Travel Remote (<ADMIN NOTE: Broken link has been removed / replaced from this post by Dell>)
But apparently this remote sticks out 1/4 of an inch and does not stay in place very well according to reviews. I've read somewhere that these CIR from Dell will only work with Dell remote....? this Dell remote seems like a failure on Dell's part. I would be willing to pay the asking price for it if it does what it is suppose to do. I want to avoid having to use a usb dongle for a remote, its just not portable.

if you do not like the travel remote, and if you don't mind carrying a larger remote, you can use any remote control designed for windows and it will work fine. when shopping for remote controls look for one with the big green windows start button on it, . i bought a hauppage tv tuner for the express slot and the bundled remote , although large worked fine. even without the tv tuner yo can still use the remote control for windows media center, maybe a little itunes, etc

ok, thanks for the reply. That is good to know. Also, do you know if the remotes for older dell models will work? From what you've said, they should.
I just want to use it for presentations. I wish they would just make a remote like the apple remote, small and portable, no dongles needed, and it's only $20...

Ok, I have confirmed that the older remote for the XPS 1330 will work for this dell laptop with windows 7 - 64 bit. You can get these (FW331) on ebay for rather cheap, I got mine for $10 used. The only thing it is missing is the green media button from the one the link in the first post (useful for running windows media.) Also, if you have problems using this remote, check that the battery is in the correct position. On the remote it saids for the anode to face up.... "up" apparently means towards the top of the remote with buttons and not faced up when you put it in. It should make sense if you are familiar with using those flat batteries.
The reason I bought the older versions is not only because it was cheaper, but mainly I thought the newer remote was made bigger for some reason after reading the reviews of it sticking out (stupid me) BUT the problem in sizing is not with the remote, it is with the 1340's smaller x54 slot !?!?!? why did dell make a smaller slot and not the normal standard size?!?! Seems like they had to make room for some of the ports up front (might be the reason the mouse pad is not in the middle as well), but they totally could have taken one of the head phone jacks out, I would rather have a real express card slot than 2 headphone jacks.... Also, it slides off VERY easily, it does not lock AT ALL.... ?? The reason for this is that there is nothing connecting to the end of the remote in the express card slot, which also means you cannot charge the battery in the express card slot. Again, most of this is in the review posted above.
I also got the mogo x54 bluetooth presenter mouse to test it out, works flawlessly and is actually a decent mouse most of the time. It sticks out like the dell remote, but it DOES lock in place when you push it in since it is connected to charge the battery. You can get these used on ebay for around $25-$35 used. (I would get this over the remote since it is more functional)
Overall, I'm really disappointed in Dell, they made a nice looking laptop look like really bad with stuff sticking out of the express card slot.... i know this seems trivial to some, but this really ticks me off.
