Which specific Core 2 Duo CPUs can a 6400 (E1505) support with the latest BIOS (A12)?

How can I tell which specific Core 2 Duo CPUs a Dell Inspiron 6400 (E1505) can support with the latest BIOS (A12)? I want to upgrade my laptop that was bought a month before Core 2 Duo came out (I assume it's not terribly different to upgrading a desktop, something I've done many times), but I don't know much about Intel CPUs at all (having had AMD CPUs since my first 486)...

Sorry, forgot to mention that I don't know if it will take ANY Core 2 Duos, but they use the same Socket as the Core Duos, so I just assumed it would.

Also, my Motherboard is a Dell 0XD720 according to SiSoft Sandra.

As far as I know you cannot upgrade to the core 2 processor, unless you change the motherboard. I think it is not worth it...the old centrino Duo is only a few % slower than the new core2.
Better wait for the next CPU breakthrough and buy a new laptop then:smileyvery-happy:

I doubt I'll ever get another laptop, as I hate buying PCs from vendors (all the branding and OEM-specific drivers and software just does my head in). I only have one because a PC at Uni is a bit pointless.

Are you sure they can't be upgraded? The BIOS code specifically says it supports newer CPUs...although I don't know if all the 6400s have the same Motherboard...yet another annoyance with OEM PCs - lack of information about the thing.

I am not sure about the CPU upgrade but I was reading it somewhere else. I think somebody asked this question before....i believe in the hardware section...

It is possible, I have upgraded my processor to the t7200, it's not worth the money to go .3ghz faster for the t7600.

As long as you have bios version A11 or higher you may upgrade to a core 2 duo processor. I recommend the 7400. It is rated a perfect score on vista. 5.0 for performance!

Well my original CPU (Core Duo T2300) is rated at 4.6...so I wouldn't expect anything less than 5.0 for a Core 2 Duo!
