WiDi on Inspiron 17R SE

I see there are several posts regarding WiDi but I think that the general view is that it should work on the system I have purchased (Inspiron 17R SE).

Unfortunately, it isn't working on mine.

When installing the recommended WiDi driver, the installer aborts with t he message "The platform is not compatible with Intel(R) WiDi or the application is in use."

I have removed and reinstalled to be safe, but the same problem arises.

I have also tried to install the Windows 7 driver, but when trying to run it fails when attempting to load a .dll.

I believe I have all the latest drivers.

Any suggestions please as to how to get this working - it is a particular requirement for me.

Thanks.

Having spent many miserable hours installing and uninstalling software and drivers, I am happy to announce that WiDi is alive and well on my system.

The information provided on the Intel website eventually led me to a successful installation.

There were three particular pages that proved invaluable and may help others with a similar problem.

What wireless adapter did you purchase?  If it was the standard one, it's Broadcom, not Intel - meaning WIDI won't work.    You must have an Intel wireless adapter in the system to use WIDI.

Are asking what my system has installed in it?

The answer is it has the Intel Centrino Wireless N2230 - I'm not quite sure how you come to the conclusion that it should be a Broadcom adapter.

In any case, the machine was specified as supporting WiDi so it certainly should do so.

Is this a 3D system?

I have been fighting this issue since the beginning of the year. Nobody can help me. Dell Gold Tech Support is clueless and has been of no help. Intel will not respond despite many MANY people having the same questions I do. The closest to helpful info I have found is from Lenovo users who have the same video card as I do (Nvidia GeForce GT 650M) and their BIOS apparently won't allow true switching to occur between integrated graphics (which is required for WiDi).

I checked out your links and they don't seem to offer anything that helps or I should say anything that is new vs. what I've found over the past eight or so months of research.

When I try to install the WiDi software, it says my platform isn't compatible because my video hardware is not compatible and the graphics driver can't find or load necessary components for WiDi. That is crazy - I have the very integrated graphics required but apparently something is preventing the software from corresponding during the WiDi installation attempt.

It's pretty obvious then that I am very likely having the same issue the Lenovo users are having, so how did you get it to work? You had success installing WiDi and I don't understand how you were able to do it.

I understand your frustration. There is very little help when things get really tough.

Hopefully, assuming the specs of our machines are the same, it should be possible to crack your problem as WiDi works fine for me.

I'm just off to work, but I'll review what I did to see what might help you and get back to you ASAP.

I’ve checked back to see what steps I took to install WiDi.

I also found that my drivers were out of date and WiDi no longer worked!

Fortunately, I have updated the drivers and it now works again.

For me, it now seems very straight forward, but I’ll give you everything so you can follow the steps exactly.

Download.

1: Driver for NVidia  GT6509M graphics card.

Download from Nvidia -  320.49-notebook-win8-win7-64bit-international-whql.exe

2. Intel Pro set wireless software.

Download from Intel - Wireless_15.8.0_e64.exe

3. Intel HD Graphics.

Download from Intel - Win64_15319.exe

4. Intel WiDi.

Download from Intel - Setup4.2.19.0.exe

Installation.

Remove any installed versions of the above using Control Panel - Device Manager/Remove Programs.

Install in the order shown above restating as necessary.

That's it.

Good luck – let me know how you get on.

to further add to the confusion, Nvidia is saying that Optimus switching is compatible with WiDi.

"Yes.  The current Intel Wireless Display (WiDi) implimentation will work with NVIDIA's Optimus technology.  Our GPU acts as the compute engine only for compute intensive applications.  The display engine is still handled by the Intel IGP display controller even when the NVIDIA GPU kicks in for applications which demand higher performance."

so the error coming up during the WiDi installation attempts that I mentioned re: the video hardware and graphics driver is now totally confusing.
