Windows 8 on Dell Inspiron 1525

Hie all,

I upgraded to windows 8 from Windows Vista Home Basic. My problem is that on the windows action centre, I get the report that my antivirus and firewall are off and I can't switch them on. I am using Norton 360. Is there a way to solve this? In my Norton, the are both ON. How can I solve these issues, I'm not feeling safe when I go online.

Thank you in advance for your help.

Hi Brijante,

Windows 8 operating system comes with built in Windows Defender security software. Since you have installed Norton 360, it might conflict with Windows defender. As long as Norton flags say you are protected, you should not face any issues with your system. You may refer to the link http://bit.ly/YecvIv

Hope this information helps.

In addition, you can set the Action Center to NOT alert you about the anti-virus and Firewall being off.

Hie Appu,

Sorry, for late response. I was on holiday. Now, I'm back. The other thing I had failed to mention, was that I managed to switch them on the first time I upgraded, but after I received some updates, it switched them off. I think that's where my major worry is. referring to that link you gave me, I read all of them and the one by pmiddag seems to have been a solution. Could you give me a breakdown of how to use, if you've looked at it. I'm not very computer-savvy, that's why I ask.

Thank you all for your responses to my problem.

Brijante.

Hi Brijante,

Thank you for the response. I went through the forums and the steps suggested by pmiddag. Looks like the issue was resolved by running a scan on the computer. You may try the following steps and see if it helps.

  • Open an elevated command prompt. To do this, click Start -> All Programs -> Accessories -> right-click Command Prompt -> click Run as administrator. If you are prompted for an administrator password or for a confirmation, type the password, or click Allow.
  • At the command prompt, type the following command sfc /scannow -> press ENTER:.
  • The sfc /scannow command scans all protected system files and replaces incorrect versions with correct Microsoft versions.

Please reply if you have any questions.

Hie Appu,

Thank you for your response, I ran the scan and there hasn't been any errors of late. I gave it about  3 days post-scan testing period. Thank you for the help.

Thank you for the response. Glad to know that the system is working fine. Looks like scanning the computer using the steps suggested by pmiddag have done the trick.

Do reach out in case you need any further assistance.
