Windows XP 64 bit drivers for D531

Just got the laptop, and I decided to put XP 64-bit on it.  I downloaded and installed all the drivers for Windows XP 64-bit from dell's site (everything but the BIOS and DVD firmware, because there were no new versions), but I am still unable to get valid drivers for the following devices:

Ethernet Controller (although the wireless is working)

Modem Device on High Definition Audio Bus

SM Bus Controller

Any ideas?

Thanks,

Chris

Check with Intel, Broadcom, and the manufacturer of the sound chip - though don't expect miracles;  XP64 support is very limited.

OK, I was able to get the modem working (woohoo)...

I downloaded the chipset drivers (AMD M690T) from AMD's website, but that did not help; after chatting with a Dell support person, it looks like AMD needs to release new/working drivers.

Guess I am out of luck for now...

OK, I think I may have figured it out - this info. is for anyone else who bought a D531 and, like me, naively assumed that a laptop built by a major computer manufacturer with 64-bit hardware would have 64-bit drivers...

For the Ethernet Controller, got the drivers directly from Broadcom's website.

The SM Bus Controller was a much different, and more diffucult endeavor:

As I was directed *by Dell*, I spoke with someone at AMD/ATI who informed me that the drivers on their site are only for desktops, and that the laptop manufacturer bears the responsibility of writing compatible drivers for the chipset (if anyone can explain why the drivers have to be different for the same chipset, I would love to know).  So it looks like the Dell guy was either giving me the runaround or was misinformed.  I called Dell back and spoke with a hardware support guy, who told me:

-he could only offer me support for the OS that was preinstalled on the laptop (makes sense)

-that the drivers listed on the site are all they have

-there is no way to know if x64 drivers would ever be written

...so basically that I was out of luck.  BUT, after some searches on support.dell.com for "M690T" I discovered that the Inspiron 1521 and 1721 also have this chipset, and luckily they also had drivers for it (although they didn't specify that they were x64).  No harm in trying though, right?  So I downloaded all the drivers, and one of them seemed to take:

R174511

The driver installed, and even though the General tab of the device properties says no driver is installed, it shows up as OK in the Device Manager list, and the Driver tab of the properties dialog shows all the driver information...so I guess I will just have to cross my fingers...

Hope this helps!
