XPS 15 9530 - Noise problem?

Hi all,

I just got my new XPS 15, amazing laptop but there's 1 big problem,

A high-pitched scratching/screeching noise is produced from the power button area ONLY when the power is plugged in and the battery is fully charged.

I've seen other forums and others have exactly the same problem, Any ideas?

I found this example http://z.mk/e6vq , the power is plugged into the laptop at 6 seconds.

Thanks

Hello Guys,

Weeks ago, every time The Dell FACEBOOK PAGE post a message even if it has nothing to see with our problems with the XPS 15, i always  comment letting them know about this issue that is affecting The XPS 15, and tell them that we can not accept it like this.

Well,   and they talk to me,  telling me this what i have to do :

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Dell Hi Hěrolď Čelěstín,

I would suggest you to update the BIOS on the computer to fix the issue. Please enter your service tag # on the link below, select the OS, then download the BIOS from BIOS section onto the system and install it.

Also, I would suggest that you run the diagnostics on the computer by following the steps mentioned in the video below and check if there is any issue with the hardware on your system.

In addition, Kindly share the system Service Tag in a Private Message so that I can check what best can be done to resolve your concern. I apologize for any inconvenience caused to you. You may reach us at

Wow! This is bad. The Dell FB representative did not even know about the problem. If he knew he would also knew that this problem can not be fixed with a BIOS update. Which means... that Dell is not planning to seriously deal with the problem any soon. Well done Dell!

Hello, I wanted to know how much this helped. Did the noise come back again or this really a good fix?

Hey Guys,

I just stumbled onto a solution which has decreased *MY* noise issues, and wanted to share, in hopes it will help others.

My XPS 9530 (Dec 2013) has made "crunching" sounds (similar to a hard drive) in the area of the power button, since Day 1.

The sounds appear to be video card related, as they are only noticeable during screen re-draws:

- web pages with scrolling banners (ex: http://www.powerball.com/pb_home.asp )

- scrolling up and down in applications (browser, document, Outlook) with the mouse wheel

And the sound is only audible when the laptop is connected to a power supply. While on battery, the sound is not noticeable.

I have tried multiple power supplies, and power sources, to no avail.

In addition to the noise issue, my screen recently started flashing uncontrollably after coming out of Sleep Mode. Researching the issue, I came upon this thread:

Dell XPS 15 9530 screen flashing problem after update new drivers.

http://en.community.dell.com/support-forums/laptop/f/3518/t/19543351.aspx

Like the user who started the thread above, I had recently upgraded my video drivers.

So, as the Dell representative suggested in that thread, I did the following:

- Downloaded the latest Intel and nVIDIA graphics drivers from Dell Support (the same ones I had recently upgraded to, dated 1/9/2014)

- Started my laptop in Safe Mode

- Went into Device Manager, under Display Adapters, and uninstalled the Intel and nVIDIA adapters (making sure to check the box to "Delete the driver software for this device")

- Rebooted the laptop

- Installed both of the graphics drivers I downloaded earlier

- Rebooted the laptop (again)

Since reinstalling the drivers, the "crunching" sound has been dramatically reduced (but NOT completely gone).

2 days ago, they Pushed back the date to April 22th ,  normally my Dell XPS 15 (9530) has to be delivered to me on March 24th ,because i did the purchase on February 18th !

Well today, they change it again in the website, saying that my Order is being sent already to the UPS company so, it's on the way, kind of confused,  but i do not mind, for all of that, all that is matter to me and everyone here is to FIND A SOLUTION TO YHE NOISE ISSUE THAT AFFECTING ALL THE XPS 15 9530,  so on March 24th  i will make an UNBOXING VIDEO, and another one Using it, so we will see if this NOISE ISSUE IS ALSO ON THE NEWEST DELL XPS RECENTLY DELIVERED TO CUSTOMER, BUYERS LIKE US.

Proof that today they send it to UPS

Not that I want to disappoint you, but your machine on the way is as faulty as it could be since the machine first came out.  As you can see, Dell never gave a solution and customers keep receiving machines with coil whine till this day.

As to 'Dell Engineering Team' on Twitter, I don't really have hope on them to make a change.

'We are aware about this and are working on it. - We will get back to you with an update as soon as it is available' is just exactly the same as what Dell keeps saying from months ago. It's not like only till this day do they realize that there's a problem.

Did you get the unit yet? And if so have you checked to see if it has the coil wine problem too?

Hello Guys,

My order was set to delivered to me on March 24th, but on March 20th i received an email saying that they send the order to me, and i go to their website, order is being sent to UPS,  until today i do not have yet my Laptop from UPS, still waiting

Like i said, once i get it, I will make for you an UNBOXING VIDEO, and Another USING IT to see how it acts, but we need to be together guys, complaining all around the internet in order to Dell take some serious measure to fix this issue.

We have to make VIDEOS, upload them in YOUTUBE, and share them across all the Social Networks and Website,  otherwise Guys, Dell will never fix this issue, they prefer to keep selling BAD LAPTOP with NOISE to make money.

In their website, my order still in the road to get to me, but i ain't get it yet,

Yes, I have my unit.  It's in the box, waiting to be returned for refund.

I turned it on once. The environment was noisy that I could not really confirm the noise from my ear. Furthermore, the machine came back with a bricked OS, thus I never tried to turn it on again.

But from the report that came with the machine, saying that nothing has been replaced, it's certain that the noise hasn't bee fixed. Moreover, during the time that the machine was at depot center, I checked it every few days. As far as I know, the only part that has been changed is HDD (Probably changed back after no luck.)

GUYS,  I DON'T THINK THIS ONE HAS NOISE ISSUE, GOD DAMN COIL WHINE,  AFTER A REFUND I THINK WE CAN TARGET THIS ONE,  WHAT DO YOU THINK GUYS ! I SEE SOME GOOD SPECS, WELL ONLY DIFFERENCE IS THAT RESOLUTION IS NOT QHD+   but     Full HD

what do you think  : http://www.razerzone.com/ca-en/store/razer-blade-pro

I would suggest you to go with the 14inch one. Similar hardware with the 17inch and better hardware than dell XPS 15 (excluding the 8GB ram which might be upgradable). AND it has the same resolution with the Dell XPS 15. Dell 15 might have a little better battery though BUT if you are an AC adapter user keep in mind that the "Optimize for Always on AC adapter" option in Dell XPS15 BIOS most likely doesn't actually work.

I received mine today and the NOISE was already unsoportable, all we have to do is us together open some tickets and send back the laptop.

March 27th, 2014 09:00

Terry B, could you please provide us with an update regarding the coil whine. How long do we have to wait? What if a fix comes after our warranty expires? Please try and fix the coil whine issue. Because of this issue I am basically unable to use this laptop for my intended purpose as the noise is distracting to people I work with. For those of us that have this issue, what do we do? Do we just wait or pursue a fix from technical support or a replacement unit? I really don't want a refund as there's no other laptop like this out there; but Dell please keep us informed at the very least.

Dude, you just have to live with it. Dell is not going to fix this issue. Keep asking for replacements until you get a unit that is not very loud. I called Dell Australia's Pro support the other day. They guy had NO IDEA about the coil whine. But he also had NO IDEA about the GPU throttling (which is another issue of this laptop). I also asked Dell on twitter and facebook and they pretend like they have never heard of those problems. So, Dell IS NOT GOING TO FIX THE ISSUE. They are just messing with us. Like the Dell representative on this forum, Terry B, who is trolling us by telling that he will look into it. He could just freaking call the xps 15 engineering team and ask the guys: "Hello guys what is going on with the coil whine of dell xps 15?". We are all mentally capable to figure out that the above would take 30 minutes maximum. But Terry B is still "investigating" the problem several weeks now. So, get over it, he is trolling us, and Dell is not planning to fix the issues. Too bad we gave so much money and as a return we are getting trolled! :D

New BIOS update is out: A03. I will install this as soon as I'm home from work.

I'm sure we're all very keen to hear from anyone here if A03 helps.
