XPS 15 9550 showing code 43 for NVIDIA 960M

Hi,

My XPS 15 9550 recently started showing the NVIDIA 960M as having a core 43 error (Windows has stopped this device because it has reported problems).  I've tried everything I can think of to fix it, including reinstalling BIOS, completely wiping both Intel and NVIDIA drivers out using DDU, reinstalling the latest drivers from the OEM, reinstalling drivers from Dell, but no luck.

Any ideas on how I can debug why I'm getting this error?

Thanks!

A Code 43 error usually means a problem with the video driver.  From your post you mentioned uninstalling the Intel and Nvidia drivers but if not i suggest these drivers in the following order.

Intel Chipset

Intel HD 530

Geforce GTX 960

I suggest testing the system with the AC adapter connected, no external displays, with the Windows ""high performance"" power plan selected (press the windows key and x key together, choose power options, power plans, advanced and high performance". Change the Nvidia 3D settings to high performance (right click the desktop, choose nvidia control panel, 3D settings, global settings, power management mode and change it to Optimal power.  Test the system like this and see if the problems continue.

If they do continue try the reverse, Go back into Nvidia control panel and change the power management mode to adaptive, or if you have the option choose Energy Saving and see if the problem continue.  If all of a sudden the problems go away on energy saving or adaptive it points to the Nvidia GPU being the problem.

If the problems continue you are either looking at reinstalling windows or a service. Please let me know what you find out.

Hi Terry,

I tried all of your suggestions, but still nothing... Is there any way to debug what exactly is failing in the driver initialization?  I've manually verified all of the PCI-E drivers are from the chipset driver package version from the Dell latest configuration, as well as the Intel graphics driver.  I've tried using the latest drivers for the igfx, chipset and GPU, but still nothing...

This unit was a refurb -- is there a chance it's a GPU hardware failure?

Thanks!

I am sorry to read that none of my suggestions helped out.  It is unlikely but certainly possible that the GPU has a defect but if this was the case I would think that the system would be giving more errors or even possibly six beep codes.

Obviously if reinstalling the OS, and making sure that the proper chipset / intel HD / nvidia drivers were installed after the reinstall and the problems continued the GPU would be the only thing left as the cause.

Unfortunately you are kind of at the point where you will either need to reinstall Windows or replace the GPU to figure out where the problem was.

I will be shooting you a friend request so that I can get your information.

Hello all, I think I'm facing similar problem, but in my case NVidia GeForce GTX 960m just disappeared from the system and recovering system state or reinstalling all driver won't help. Not sure what to do. Probably will have to reinstall whole system, which will take a lot of time to setup all of the software etc. So I have right now system which works only from Intel HD graphics :( with a very bad quality
