XPS M1530 HDMI to DVI display?

I'm considering getting an XPS M1530. I already have a beautiful Dell 2405FPW 24" LCD display that has a DVI input, but no HDMI input.  I know there are cables that have an HDMI connector on one end and DVI on the other.  Has anyone tried connecting the HDMI output of the 1530 to a display with a DVI input?  Does it work?  At 1920 x 1200?

I have a friend who says it won't work because devices with HDMI outputs are not "allowed" to run a full resolution into a non-HDCP display.   But has anyone tried it?   I really don't want to degrade the video quality by going VGA to VGA.

Works great - whadya have to loose? Pick up a cable at your local computer store - $20 version will do. Don't bother with name brand cables that cost $70 - $200 (e.g. Monster), waste of money.

Good Luck.

Welcome to the forums :smileyhappy:

I think you'll find the answer to your question here?

Post 3 suggests: "... you're going to be out of luck with 1920x1200 unless, by some bizarre miracle, Dell implemented HDMI version 1.3 (usually, only 1.2 or earlier is used).

Also, with a suitably good monitor, 1920x1200 via VGA is indistinguishable from DVI.
My Dell 2405FPW works wonders with incoming VGA."

Yup, analog has come a far way. I've been using VGA for years for gaming, and to be honest there's no real difference to the eye.

Thanks - that thread on notebookreview.com was very helpful - and basically said that yes a 1530 can drive a display at 1920 x 1200 through an HDMI to DVI cable.

Now for one step further - has anyone tried playing a blu-ray DVD on the 1530 in that configuration?  That's where supposedly the display *has* to have an HDMI input and support HDCP to work.  Could it be that Windows is just fine with the HDMI to DVI configuration, but a blu-ray player app is going to burp?
