What thread is previously relevant?
Is it a 'driver' issue?

There have been quite a few threads on this so can we assume you have gone through the Sticky?
You do or do not get a popup when you plug in the headphones?
Most phone earbuds will work but I did see one with a 4 ring (5 connector) plug which may have a problem....

Try this for the first link, hopefully it will lead to some relevant info.

We know, if you have a combined Audio port, if you do not get the popup window to select a device, the headset will not be recognized.
If you don't get the popup window on a combined audio port system, the plug is not fully inserted or the service which handles the popup is not available...

This seems to have arisen again after the Windows 10 Creators Update. I found the issue resolved for me by installing the latest drivers (updated in May 17) and ensuring that the Realtek Audio Manager and Realtek I2S Audio Background Proc were enabled in Task Manager -> Start-up.
When I first checked they had both been disabled during or as a result of the Windows update.
All working again now and when I plug headphones in I am now prompted correctly.
