a whole bunch of errors

please excuse the original message i posted,

 

my question is what can i do and how much will it cost for dell to check up on my out of warranty inspiron 1150 with the following errors

-unmountable boot volume

-page fault in nonpaged area - partmgr.sys

-kernel stack inpage error

- a disk read error occurred

- primary hard disk o not found

- call dell technician and report #m1004

these errors occured when i attempted to resolve my win xp pro with a win xp home cd via the recovery console for the (unmountable boot volume) I had originally resolved this issue about a month ago using that same winxp home cd.

But not in attempting to resolve it for a second time, the aforementioned erros occured.

Also my laptop overheats constantly, and shuts off while i'm attempting to fix the errors.

Originally my battery would give me 1.5 to 2hours of performace away from the adaptor but now it only allows 30 mins after being plugged in all day.

awhile ago my backlight of the lcd wouldnt come on on startup but after hookin my latop to an external display and subsequently taking it out, it came on back.

If some1 could shed some light on any of these issues, i'd greatly appreciate it. I have already made up my mind that I only want a dell technician to look at it, and will be sending it into dell in september when i return to school in the states. Till then I'm without my laptop. Also in sending it into Dell, will they have to fromat my hardrive and reinstall winxp pro, the reason i ask is because i have some very important papers on my computer that i wish i had backed up.

You have at least two issues. The first is a dying hard drive that needs immediate replacement. The other likely is an accumulation of dust on the heatsink that is causeing the system to overheat. You should clean the heatsink with some compressed duster spray - continuing to operate the system while overheating will eventually destroy it. The other issue is simply an end of life battery that needs to be replaced.


The hard drive will be under $100 to replace. Back up your data immediately, as the current drive is not long for this world.

If dusting the system fixes the issue, you're all set - if not, and there's been mainboard damage, you're looking at a $400-500 out of warranty repair, which means basically a new notebook - it's not worth putting that much money into a budget notebook.

Ok how do i go about backing up my old harddrive and would it not eb possible for the technician if i send it in, when replacin the drive to do this for me i.e backup the harddrive?
