crashes when power cord removed

Hi

Today my xps m1530 has decided that if i remove the power cable it will crash. When i reboot it has safe mode etc options as not shut down correctly, and once booted everything on desktop is moved.

Battery is brand new and fully charged, no settings have recently been changed and apart from some slysoft software, no programs installed.

Any ideas?

Thanks

Either the battery is DOA, or the power board circuit is faulty and not charging the battery or not switching the battery in when the plug is pulled. Your battery is old enough to be at end-of-life.

Check the battery for charge using the test buttons on the battery. If discharged, see if you can find someone with an M1530 where you can try to charge your battery. If it is bad, you can get one at eBay for much less than an official Dell unit.

If the battery is OK, then you will probably need to replace the power board. Will cost about $200 from Dell or much less if you buy the part and do it yourself.

If the "brand new battery" is not a geniune Dell replacement battery, it could be incompatible. Dell laptops are fussy about using Dell batteries.

battery is NEW as i mentioned and when tested using the test buttons is FULL as mentioned.

Fan does seem to be working hard though... is that an indicator of something?

laptop will NOT turn on without being connected to power cord, but battery is still definitely charging.

It looks like it's a mainboard failure. The circuitry of a mainboard is quite complicated but the (simplified)video below should give you a clue how  things work. The power control logic on the mainboard relies on information given by the battery and the powersupply.Assuming that the new battery is OK (electronic inside battery is fine) the laptop needs to be serviced
